쿠바 한인사회는 멕시코 한인사회에서 파생되었다. 1905년 멕시코 유카탄반도에 도착한 한인 1,033명이 약 32개의 에네켄 농장에서 흩어져 고된 농촌노동자의 삶을 살던 중, 그중 약 300명이 1921년 더 나은 삶을 찾아서 자발적 계약노동자로 쿠바의 사탕수수농장을 향해 재이주했다. 쿠바 한인사회는 2021년 3월 25일 이민 100주년을 맞이하여 쿠바의 언론과 방송 그리고 Youtube에 자신의 이민역사를 활발히 알렸다. 우리에게 이러한 사실이 낯설게 느껴지는 것은 아마도 쿠바가 시리아와 더불어 한국과 외교관계가 수립되지 않았기 때문일 것이다. 쿠바는 1959년 카스트로의 사회주의 혁명 이후 남한 대신 1960년 8월 29일 북한과 수교하고, 더 나아가 미국과 1961년 단교했다. 따라서 쿠바 한인사회는 일제강점기 독립운동을 함께 했던 미국과 멕시코의 한인사회는 물론 우리 한국 사회와도 자연스럽게 멀어졌다. 2021년 3월 이민 100주년을 맞은 쿠바 한인 후손의 수는 총 1,092명이다. 그리고 그중 순수 한인 혈통을 가진 후손은 약 7%에 해당하는 83명에 불과한데, 이것은 쿠바 한인사회가 100년이라는 세월 속에서 타민족과 인종적 혼합으로 쿠바 사회에 동화되었다는 것을 의미한다. 그런데 2021년 행한 설문 조사 결과에 의하면, 그들은 한국인으로서의 정체성을 차츰 회복하는 것으로 나타났다. 그것의 원인으로는 1997년 시작된 한-쿠바의 통상 교류, 2005년 대한무역투자진흥공사(KOTRA)의 아바나 지사 설립, 2010년 한인후손회 설립, 2013년 쿠바 국영 TV의 K-드라마 방영에 따른 한류 확산, 국가보훈처의 독립유공자 예우 보상 그리고 재외동포재단의 한인 후손 직업연수프로그램이 한몫한 것으로 보인다.
The Korean community in Cuba was derived from the Korean community in Mexico. 1,033 Koreans who arrived in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in 1905 were scattered across 32 Henequen farms and were taking a hard-working lives as rural workers. Among them, about 300 re-emigrated to Cuba’s sugar cane farms as voluntary contract workers in 1921 in search of a better life. On March 25, 2021, commemorating the 100th anniversary of immigration, the Korean community in Cuba actively reported its immigration history to Cuban media, broadcasting, and Youtube. However, the fact that this fact feels unfamiliar to us is probably because Cuba has not established diplomatic relations with South Korea along with Syria. Cuba established diplomatic ties with North Korea on August 29, 1960 after Castro's socialist revolution in 1959 instead of South Korea, and further cut ties with the United States in 1961. Therefore, the Korean community in Cuba naturally moved away from Korean society as well as from the Korean communities in the United States and Mexico, with them Koreans in Cuba had shared independence movements during the Japanese colonial period. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of immigration in March 2021, the total number of Korean descendants in cuba is 1,092. The fact that only 83 descendants (7% of total) has Korean pure ancestry, means that the Korean community in Cuba has been assimilated into Cuban society through marriges to other ethnicity in the past 100 years. However, according to the our survey conducted in 2021, they are gradually recovering their identity as Koreans. The reasons for this are the trade exchange between Korea and Cuba that started in 1997, the establishment of the Havana branch Office of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency(KOTRA) in 2005, Foundation of the Association of Korean Descendants in Cuba in 2010, the spread of Hallyu following the K-drama airing on Cuban state TV in 2013, and Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs’ courtesy compensation to the meritorious independence fighters and the Overseas Koreans Foundation's vocational training programs for Korean descendants in Cuba seem to have played a part.
