이 글은 기존 연구에서 심(心) 개념을 마음(mind)으로 해석하는 방식과 다르게, 정제두가 『황제내경(黃帝內經)』에 바탕을 두고 심(心) 개념에서 심장(heart)의 의미를 강조하는 특성을 검토한다. 정제두는 의학적인 접근을 통해서 인체에 있어서 심장과 신장이 지니는 신(神)과 정(精)의 결정적인 역할을 조명하였다. 나아가 심장의 신(神)과 『통서(通書)』의 우주 생성론에서 초월적인 원리로서의 신 개념 간의 융합을 시도하였다. 신은 우주를 구성하는 기(氣)가 모든 곳에 충만하고 다 할 때가 없다는 특성을 의미하는 동시에, 인체에 있어서 심장이 박동을 통해서 혈액 순환을 이루고 한순간도 멈추지 않다는 특성을 가리킨다. 이러한 신은 곧바로 양명학에서 말하는 인간의 ‘도덕심’인 양지(良知)다. 마지막으로 정제두는 신에 초점을 두고 신의 실제적인 발동은 생·사·진·망의 네 가지 형태로 구분하여, 결국 윤리적인 인간이 되기 위한 공부는 살아 있는 신[生理] 속에 양지가 가림이 없이 제대로 드러나는 것을 택하는 과정으로 본다[擇其眞理].
Unlike the method of interpreting the concept of Xin心 as ‘mind’ in previous studies, this article reviews the characteristics of Jeong Je-du emphasizing the meaning of heart in the concept of Xin based on the Huang Di Nei Jing黃帝內經. Jeong Je-du shed light on the decisive role of the Shen神 and Jing精 of the heart and kidney in the human body through a medical approach. Furthermore, he attempted to converge the concept of Shen神 as a transcendental principle in the theory of space creation based on Tong Shu通書. Shen神 refers to the characteristic that the Qi氣 that makes up the universe is full of all places and all the time, and that blood circulation penetrates the whole body through the heartbeat of the human body and does not stop for a moment. Finally, Jeong Je-du focuses on Shen神 and divides the actual evocation of Shen神 into four forms: life, death, truth and lie, and in the end, studying to become an ethical human being is viewed as a process of seeking the proper manifestation in the living Shen神.
