The objective of this study is to examine whether there is a heterogeneous relationship among academic interests, academic self-efficacy, and perceived academic competence among 1st year students who participated in the learning community activities. Furthermore, this study explores the differences in their core values according to potential classes. For this study, 237 students in total participated, consisting of 79 (32.9%) male students and 158 (66.7%) female students, all of whom were enrolled in the required General Core English classes. A mixed regression analysis was used to extract the potential classes according to the learner's level of learning motivation, and to identify the potential classes in the relationship among academic interests, academic self-efficacy, and perceived academic competence. Following this, differences in competencies recorded before and after class were analyzed. The results of the study show the following: First, three heterogeneous classes (a high learning motivation group, a middle learning motivation group, and a low learning motivation group) were derived as a result of classifying the potential classes according to the type of relationships among the academic interests, academic self-efficacy, and perceived academic competence of students taking learning community classes. Second, there was a difference in the change of core competencies according to the learning motivation of the potential class in the learning community class. In the case of the high learning motivation group, we found that all the six core competences (Communication, Self-Direction, Knowledge, Problem Solving, Cooperation and Dedication, Universal Value) improved after the students took the learning community class. Third, with regard to the results on the difference according to the potential classes after the learning community class, we found that the high learning motivation group showed the highest competency level, and in the case of the low learning motivation group, the core competency did not show any difference before and after participating in the learning community class. This study is meaningful in its exanimation of the heterogeneous relationships of learning motivation variables in the learning community class, as well as in its broadening of our understanding of learners by identifying the heterogeneous properties of the relationship among the variables within the group. Thus, this study suggests implications for the design of learning community teaching and learning models.
