This study aims to examine the implication of the 'housewife' character in Chinese TV dramas, focusing on the character of Gujia, the central character of the Chinese TV drama 'Just 30’, and the settings surrounding her. Secondly, this study analyzes the historical changes of the way ‘housewife’ characters has been represented in Chinese TV drama since 1990s. For a more three-dimensional and in-depth analysis, the character of Gujia living in 2020 China will be compared with the representative housewife characters of popular Chinese TV drama, including TV situation comedies, who lived in the 1990s and 2000s. This is part of a diachronic study on the realities of women in China, especially the realities of ‘housewives’, and their representation in mass media, especially TV dramas. As TV dramas interact closely with the contemporary society, culture, and discourse trends due to the characteristics of its media and genre, this study intends to show the development process of the gender politics and discourse trend of Chinese society over 30 years since the 1990s during which capitalization accelerated in China. Through this study, it is expected that our understanding on today's Chinese society, especially the women's realities and gender politics in China can be improved, as well as today’s gender issues of Korean society and East Asian countries which shares relatively similar cultural backgrounds. Also, it is expected that this study can be a basic research for the follow-up studies such as historical, intercultural and international comparative studies on gender politics between Korea and China.
