본고는 칸트와 아렌트의 교차해석을 통해 칸트적 계몽의 핵심인 이성의 공적 사용의 의미를 해명하고자 하는 시도다. 이성의 공적 사용의 의미 규명과 칸트와 아렌트 교차해석이라는 상호교직되어 있는 두 가지 작업의 핵심은 각각 다음과 같다. 1) 그간 뚜렷이 구분되어 논의되지 않았던 주체 외부와 내부를 향한 이성의 공적 사용을 구분하고 각각의 의미를 복수성을 본질로 하는 공적 공간으로서의 세계와 관련하여 ‘세계 구성’과 ‘세계 수용’으로 개념화한다. 2) 주로 『칸트 정치철학 강의』에 나타난 칸트 판단 개념에 대한 해석을 중심으로 이루어져 왔던 칸트와 아렌트의 관계에 대한 논의를 이성의 공적 사용에 대한 재해석을 매개로 세계, 정치, 공공성 등 아렌트 사상 전반의 문제의식을 함축하는 개념들과 관련된 것으로 확장한다. 종합하면 본고의 논의는 일종의 해석학적 순환을 이루는바, 한편으로는 아렌트의 정치행위이론 및 판단이론과의 교차해석을 통해 이성의 공적 사용이라는 문제가 갖는 의의를 현대화하려는 노력인 동시에, 다른 한편으로는 역으로 이성의 공적 사용이라는 문제계를 도입함으로써 칸트와 아렌트의 관계에 대한 연구에 새로운 접근경로를 제안하려는 이론적 시도라고 할 수 있다.
This paper attempts to deepen the understanding of the meaning of public use of reason, which is the core of Kantian enlightenment, through the intersectional interpretation of Kant and Arendt. The cores of the two interwoven works, elucidating the meaning of public use of reason and intersectional interpretation of Kant and Arendt, are as follows. 1) To distinguish the outward use and the inward use of reason, which have not been clearly distinguished and discussed, and conceptualize the former as 'world-constitution' and the latter 'world-internalization' in relation to the concept 'world' as a public space with pluralism as its essence. 2) To expand the discussion on the relationship between Kant and Arendt, which has been mainly focused on the interpretation of Kant's concept of judgment in Lectures on Kant's Political Philosophy, to be related to the overall problematics of Arendt's political theory through the reinterpretation of public use of reason. Taken together, this paper constitutes a kind of hermeneutic cycle, in the sense that, on the one hand, it is an effort to modernize the problematics of public use of reason through intersectional interpretation of Kant and Arendt, and on the other, conversely, it is a theoretical attempt to suggest a new approach to the study of the relationship between Kant and Arendt by introducing the problematics of public use of reason.
