본 연구는 이이화, 반민족문제연구소, 대통령소속 친일반민족행위 진상규명위원회, 친일인명사전 편찬위원회, 민족문제연구소, 미즈타니 사야카, 이정남 등에 의한 ‘이능화의 친일 행적 및 역사왜곡’에 관한 기존의 연구성과들과 이능화와 관련된 기록 및 사료들을 최대한 총망라하여 대한제국기 및 일제강점기에 있어서 ‘이능화의 친일 반민족 행적’을 구체적이고 상세하게 조목조목 밝히는 것을목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 바와 같이 ‘이능화의 친일 반민족 활동’은 매우 다양한 방면에서 아주 구체적이고 실제적으로 이루어졌다. 이능화는 일제강점기에 일제의조선 식민통치에 현저히 협력하여 일본제국으로부터 고위관직과 다양한 포상 및훈장들을 받았을 뿐만 아니라 조선사편수회, 친일 불교단체, 친일 학회, 친일 조직들에 적극적으로 가담하여 ‘조선사(朝鮮史) 왜곡’과 ‘식민사관(植民史觀) 전파’ 에 앞장섰으며, 심지어는 일본의 초대 천황인 진무 천황(神武 天皇)을 시작으로, 조선의 강제 일본 식민지화의 원흉이었던 메이지 천황(明治 天皇), 다이쇼 천황(大正 天皇), 쇼와 천황(昭和 天皇) 등 일본 천황들을 찬양하는 한시(漢詩)인 「황화만년지곡(皇化萬年之曲)」을 지어 바치며 일제의 조선 식민지 지배를 정당화(正當化)시키기까지 하였다. 즉 이능화는 ‘단순히 왜곡된 『조선사』 편찬에 참여한정도’가 아니라 다방면에서 다양한 루트를 통해 매우 실제적이고 구체적인 친일활동을 전개해 간 대한제국기 및 일제강점기의 대표적인 ‘친일 반민족 행위자’이자 우리나라 근대 사학계의 대표적인 ‘친일 어용학자’였다. 무엇보다 중요한 점은 이러한 이능화의 학술적 성과물들이 모두 친일(親日)· 매국(賣國)과 맞바꾼 결과물이라는 사실이다. 비록 이능화와 같이 이미 사망한‘친일 반민족 행위자’들을 이제 와서 직접적으로 단죄할 수는 없지만, 이러한 친일(親日)·매국(賣國), 그리고 ‘소수의 자극적인 특정기록만을 근거로 한 무리한일반화의 오류’를 통한 어설픈 ‘역사왜곡(歷史歪曲) 행위’는 이능화처럼 이렇게‘기록’을 통해서 우리나라의 역사 속에 친일파(親日派)·매국노(賣國奴)·역사왜곡자(歷史歪曲者)라는 오명(汚名)의 꼬리표가 달려 영원히 후세에 낙인(烙印)될수 있음을 매우 신중하게 자각하고, 일반화할 수 있는 충분한 근거들을 제시하면서 해당 역사에 대한 논조를 펼쳐야 할 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to examine clarify the “Pro-Japanese activities and distortion of history by Lee Neung Hwa” during the Korean Empire period and Japanese empire’s colonial rule in more details by covering as much as records and historical records related to Lee Neung Hwa and the existing researches on “Pro-Japanese activities and distortion of history by Lee Neung Hwa” by Lee E-Hwa, Research Institute for Anti-Nationalism Issues, Presidential Committee for the Inspection of Collaborations for Japanese Imperialism, Pro-Japanese Collaborator Dictionary Compilation Committee, The Center for Historical Truth and Justice, Sayaka Mizutani, and Lee Jeong Nam. As clarified in this study, Lee Neung Hwa committed the pro-Japanese and anti-national activities in a practical and detained in various aspects. He clearly collaborated with the Japanese colonial rule during the colonial period, appointed as a high-ranking official by the Japanese empire, and got numbers of rewards and medals. In addition, Lee Neung Hwa was actively involved in the Korean History Compilation Committee, pro-Japanese Buddhist organizations, pro-Japanese societies, and pro-Japanese organizations to lead in distorting the Korean history and advocating the colonialism. He even wrote and dedicated a Chinese poem titled [Hwanghwamannunzigok] praising the Japanese emperors, including Emperor Meiji and Emperor Showa, and rationalize the Japanese empire’s colonial rule on the Joseon Dynasty. In other words, Lee Neung Hwa went beyond simply participating in compiling a distorted history of Joseon Dynasty. Instead, Lee Neung Hwa was pro-Japanese and anti-nationalist who carried out pro-Japanese activities in a practical and detailed manner in various aspects through different routes. Lee Neung Hwa was also a government-patronized and pro-Japanese scholar in the modern Korean history.
