본 논고는 레비나스가 의도하는 다원주의의 요체를 파악하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이에 우리는 『전체성과 무한』의 주요 의도 중 하나인 “주체성에 대한 옹호”라는 레비나스의 사유 노선을 따라서, 그에게 ‘나’의 다원성을 확보하는 것이 어떤 점에서 중요하고, 이것이 어떤 철학적 의미를 함축하는지 알아볼 것이다. 이 논점을 오롯이 드러내기 위해서, 우리는 레비나스가 존재자로서의 주체를 정립하는 가운데 자신이 의도하는 새로운 의미의 다원주의를 본격적으로 제안하는 『전체성과 무한』의 1부 B를 심층적으로 독해한다. 이 독해에서 우리는 ‘무신론’과 ‘분리’가 한 사람으로서의 ‘나’라는 존재자의 삶의 자유와 비밀성을유지하고 보존해주는 시발점이자 계기가 된다는 점을 해명하고, 이 계기를 기반으로 삼아 전개되는 다원주의를 자신의 고유한 삶을 향유하는 ‘나(들)’의 다원주의라는 용어로 재구성한다. 그런 다음, 이것이 『전체성과 무한』의 전체 구도에서 어떤 역할을 하는지 해명하고, 끝으로 이런 ‘나(들)’의 다원주의가 가지는 사회철학적 함의를 간략하게 짚는다.
This paper aims to lay hold of the essence of pluralism as intended by Emmanuel Levinas. In this body of work, we will uncover the way in which it is imperative to secure the pluralism of the “ego(s)” along Levinas’ line of “a defense of subjectivity,” which is one of the main intentions of his Totality and Infinity. In so doing, the philosophical meaning of such pluralism will be elucidated. To this end, an in-depth reading is given of B of section I of Totality and Infinity that proposes the pluralism of a renewed meaning while establishing the subject as seeking enjoyment and freedom. By way of this reading, this paper sheds light on the concepts of atheism and separation as Levinas’ own terms that enable the maintenance and preservation of each person’s own freedom of life, as well as the secret interiority in each ego’s life, while interpreting the plurality of the subjects’ life unfolded through such moments into the pluralism of “ego(s).” Moreover, this paper clarifies how such pluralism plays a vital role in the overall composition of Totality and Infinity. Then, it ends with a brief discussion of the socio-philosophical implications of Levinas’ pluralism of “ego(s).”
