이 논문은 그림 형제의 민담 「최고의 도둑 The Master Thief」이 방정환에 의해 ‘동화’ 「천당 가는 길」로 번역되면서 어떤 메시지와 특징을 담은 이야기로 재탄생했는지를 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 그림의 「최고의 도둑」을 중세 유럽 농민반란의 역사적 현실의 반영이자 이야기꾼들의 이상과 소망이 담긴 민담이라는 점, 서구 문화에 등장하는 매력적인 캐릭터인 트릭스터, 의적의 관점에서 검토하였다. 방정환 번역작 「천당 가는 길」을 천도교 청년운동가에서 어린이운동가이자 아동문학가로 활동 영역을 전환, 확장하던 시기 방정환의 사상과 활동, 문학적 취향이 반영된 작품으로 주목하였다. 번역동화집 『사랑의 선물』 출간 이후 「천당 가는 길」을 『천도교회월보』에 재수록한 데에서 독자와 발표 매체의 특성을 고려해 방정환의 번역 목적을 살피고, 콘텍스트적 접근을 통해 기존의 읽기와는 다른 방식으로 「천당 가는 길」을 재해석하였다.
The aim of this thesis is to examine how The Master Thief, a folk tale by the Brothers Grimm, is reborn as a story in terms of the message and characters as it was translated into a ‘children’s story’ The Road to Heaven by Bang Jeong-hwan. The Master Thief by the Brothers Grimm was considered from the viewpoint that it is a folk tale reflecting the historical reality of the European peasant revolts in the Middle Ages and the ideals and wishes of storytellers and involves attractive characters such as tricksters and righteous outlaw appearing in Western culture. Bang Jeong-hwan’s translated work, The Road to Heaven, was noted as a work reflecting Bang’s thoughts, activities, and literary tastes at the time when he switched from a youth activist of Cheondogyo to a children’s activist and a writer of children’s literature. Given the fact that The Road to Heaven was included again in Cheondogyohoewolbo (Monthly Magazine of Cheondogyo) after its publication in Bang’s collection of translated children’s stories, The Gift of Love, this thesis examined Bang’s purpose of translation paying attention to characteristics of his readers and publication medium, and reinterpreted The Road to Heaven in a way different from the existing reading through a contextual approach.
