일제 강점기의 대표적인 민족시인으로 널리 알려진 윤동주에게 기독교 신앙은 매우 중요하다. 윤동주는 기독교인 가정에서 태어났을 뿐만 아니라, 그가 다닌 학교는 대부분 기독교 계열의 학교였다. 기독교 민족학교로 널리 알려져 있는 명동학교는 윤동주 재학 중에 기독교 사립학교에서 일반 사립학교로 또 공립학교로 계속 성격이 바뀌었다. 은진중학교에서는 사회주의의 영향력이 확대되어 기독교 신앙을 가진 학생들과 사회주의 사상을 가진 학생들 사이의 대립으로 혼란스러웠으며, 숭실중학교는 성경 교육을 실시하기 위해 불리한 조건을 수용하고 총독부의 ‘지정’을 받은 사립 각종학교였다. 일제의 신사참배 강요로 혼란스럽던 숭실중학교를 윤동주는 7개월 만에 자퇴하고 일본인이 운영하는 광명학원 중학부에 편입하였다. 윤동주는 신사참배 문제로 혼란스럽던 연희전문의 상황을 잘 알고 있었으나, 민족 계몽운동의 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 연희전문에 입학하였다. 연희전문의 원한경 교장은 조선 민족의 지도자를 양성하겠다는 학교의 설립 취지와 조선 민중의 교육에 대한 열망을 감안하여 기독교의 ‘전도사업’과 ‘교육사업’을 분리하는 방법으로 학교를 유지하였다. 연희전문 학생들은 학교의 교육방침인 ‘기독교주의’와 민족해방의 수단으로 널리 받아들여졌던 ‘사회주의’의 영향을 받으며 적극적으로 민족운동을 실천하였다. 윤동주는 연희전문에서 기독교 ‘신앙’의 실천과 기독교 ‘가치’의 실천, ‘조선’의 기독교인과 ‘기독교인’ 조선사람의 관계 등에 대해 고민하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 윤동주는 자신의 신앙관을 새롭게 정립하고 주체적 자아의식을 형성하였으며, 민족운동의 실천적 대안을 모색하고자 일본 유학을 떠났으나 뜻을 이루지 못하고 체포되어 옥사하였다.
To Yoon Dong-ju, widely known as a representative Korean national poet during the Japanese colonial era, Christian faith was extremely important. The Myeongdong School changed from a mission school to a private school and later to a public school when Yoon was studying there. At Eunjin School, which was founded by the Canadian Presbyterian Mission, the spread of socialism’s influence was causing a chaotic situation, with conflicts emerging between students who followed socialist ideals and those who primarily followed the Christian faith. Soongsil School was a private school that accepted disadvantageous conditions from the Japanese Governor-General in order to continue Bible education and had therefore received an exceptional “designation” from the Japanese imperialists. Although Yoon Dong-ju was well aware of the chaotic situations caused by the shrine worship issue at Chosen Christian College, he nevertheless entered this school to explore new possibilities for the national enlightenment movement. At the C.C.C, Yoon Dong-ju continued to ponder the “implementation of Christian faith” and the “implementation of Christian values”. He also continued to think about the “Christians of Chosun” and the “Chosun people that believe in Christ”.
