본 논문은 시몬 드 보부아르의 노년이라는 작품을 중심으로 노인이 처한 외적⋅내적현실에 대한 분석을 통해 보부아르가 노년 문제의 근본적 원인을 어떻게 진단하고 있는지를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 보부아르는 우선 노인이 처한 외적 현실에 대한 분석을통해, 노인의 타자성이 착취 구조를 기반으로 유지되어 온 이 사회가 자신들의 야만적인착취 행위를 정당화하기 위해 만들어 낸 인위적인 산물에 해당한다는 것을 설득력 있게증명해 낸다. 그리고 상호성 개념을 중심으로, 이러한 행보를 정당화하기 위해 그간 사회가 구사해 온 전략을 비판적으로 드러낸다. 동시에 사회가 부여한 노인의 이미지를 자기것으로 받아들이는 과정에서 노인이 내적으로 겪게 마련인 혼란과 모순 역시 가시화한다. 그 결과, 노인의 내면을 한 인간이 인간으로서 경험하는 존재론적 갈등 및 인간으로 남기위한 실존적 투쟁이 벌어지는 장으로 재규정하기에 이른다. 이를 통해 보부아르는 우리사회가 걸어 온 그간의 행보를 반성적으로 되돌아 볼 수 있는 기회를 독자에게 제공하고자 한다.
This article, focusing on Simone de Beauvoir's work, La Vieillesse, aims to explore her analysis of the external and internal realities of ‘the old’. First, by analyzing the external reality of ‘the old’, Beauvoir proves convincingly that ‘the otherness’ of ‘the old’ is an artificial construct created to hide his immorality through our society that has been maintained based on a structure making use of exploitation. And, with the concept of reciprocity, she reveals in a critical fashion the deceptive strategy that our society has been using to justify their immoral decision. At the same time, Beauvoir also describes the confusion and contradiction that ‘the old’ face internally in the process of accepting ‘the otherness’ provided by society through his own nature. Through this process, the internal workings of ‘the old’ is redefined as an arena of existential struggle where a human being fights to keep his human dignity. Ultimately, she wants to provide her readers with an opportunity to reflect on the steps that our society has taken.
