동물과 인간은 역사 속에서 필연적 관계를 형성해왔다. 하지만 동물에 대한 이해범주는 결국 인간의 자기이해와 세계를 해석하는 관점에 종속되어 있다. 최근 동물에 대한 사회적 정보량이나 관심사는 폭증이라고 할 수 있을 정도로 늘어나고 있다. 그것은 단순히 반려동물을 기르는 가정이 많아지면서 발생한 상업적, 문화적 정보의 측면도 있다. 하지만 공장식 축산 형태나 동물실험, 그리고 동물 학대와 범죄행위 증가로 인해 발생하는 여러 가지 문제점들은 자본, 노동, 윤리 등 인간 사회 내부의 근본적인 차원들과 결부되어 있다. 이른바 ‘동물로의 전환(animal turn)’은 우리에게 이제 피할 수 없는 문제이다. 이와 같은 관점으로 이 논문은 70년대 이후 지속적으로 전개되어 온 동물에 대한 학문적 관심의 흐름을 정리해보고자 한다. 동물 권리의 자각에서 시작된 학문적 대상으로서 동물은 그와 관련되어서 인간의 윤리적 문제와 인간 존재 자체에 대한 사고영역을 확장하면서 ‘인간다움’에 대한 기준을 다시 숙고하게 만들기에 이른다. 또한 이는 식생활의 고려나 환경문제 등 실천적 영역과 복잡하게 얽혀 있기도 하다. 따라서 동물에 대한 인식을 인간의 윤리적 범주에 대한 확장과 권리 주체로 부상한 동물이라는 관점으로 나누어서 살펴보기로 한다. 이를 통해 동물을 사유한다는 것에 대해 비현실적‧비과학적 태도로 여겨왔던 비판적 관점을 극복하고 동물 사유의 전체적인 맥락을 고려할 수 있기를 기대한다. 나아가 인간 이성을 지탱해온 형이상학적 이분법을 거부하면서 인간과 동물의 구분을 허물기 위한 최근의 논의들까지 살펴봄으로써 동물을 사유한다는 것이 하나의 대상으로 동물을 인지하는 태도에서 벗어나 동물과 함께 하는 새로운 사회로의 확장을 만드는 가능성으로 받아들여질 수 있기를 기대해본다. 동물을 사유한다는 것은 지금 우리 사회의 문제점을 진단하면서 더 나은 사회 모델로의 변화를 고민할 때에도 필수적이라고 할 수 있다.

Animals and humans have formed an inevitable relationship in history. However, the category of understanding of animals is subordinate to the view of human self-understanding and interpreting the world. Recently, the amount of social information about animals has exploded. This is simply because more families have pets. The fundamental reason is that factory farm, animal testing, and animal abuse crimes are related to the inside of human society such as capital, labor, and ethics. ‘Animal turn’ is an inevitable theme. This paper attempts to summarize the flow of academic interest in animals that have been continuously developed since the 1970s. Animals as an academic object began with the awareness of their rights and became associated with human ethical issues, making them think again about humanity. In addition, it is complexly intertwined with practical areas such as dietary consideration and environmental issues. This paper hope that the discussion on animal rights will be able to overcome the narrow view that has been criticized as unrealistic and unscientific attitudes. Animals that have been unilaterally used for human development are now reflecting the essential aspects of human society and asking new questions about human ethics. Thinking about animals can be said to be essential even when thinking about changing to a better social model while diagnosing problems in our society.
