김현석의 영화 <YMCA 야구단>, <스카우트>, <아이 캔 스피크>는 가해자의 사과와 반성이 제때 이뤄지지 않아 피해자의 고통이 계속되고 있는 비극적인 과거를 소재로 삼은 코미디 영화이다. 이에 본 논문은 과거를 재현하는 김현석 특유의 작법에 대하여 고찰하고자 하였다. 김현석은 과거의 사건을 조직하는 과정에서 희극적 장치를 적극적으로 활용한다. 그의 영화에서 재현된 비극과 희극이 공존하는 아이러니한 상황과 그 가운데 놓인 등장인물의 변화 양상은 영화를 통해 말하고자 하는 의미와 직결된다. 그러므로 일상의 후면에서 작동하는 비극과 전면에서 작동하는 희극의 결합, 그리고 그 가운데에 놓인 인물의 변화에 주목하여 분석할 필요가 있다. 관객은 우스꽝스럽게 형상화된 과거를 마주함으로써 작중의 시대 상황과는 정서적 거리를 유지한 채로 마음 편히 웃게 된다. 그러나 사건의 흐름에 따라 인물들이 변화하면서 웃음의 방향은 달라진다. 웃음의 주체였던 관객은 웃음의 대상으로 전락하여 반성의 장에 놓인다. 세 편의 영화에서 웃음은 이와 같은 역전을 바탕으로 관객에게 자기반성을 촉구한다. 결과적으로 김현석이 구사하는, 희극적 형상화를 통한 거리두기의 방식은 비극적 과거에 대한 관객의 성찰을 유도한다는 측면에서 유효하다고 할 수 있다.
Kim Hyun-seok's films "YMCA Baseball Team", "Scout", and "I Can Speak" are comedy films based on the tragic past in which the perpetrator's apology and reflection are not made in time, and the victim's pain continues. Therefore, this study tried to examine Kim Hyun-seok's unique method of reproducing the past. Kim Hyun-seok actively utilizes comedic devices in the process of organizing past events. The ironic situation in which the tragedy and comedy reproduced in his film coexist and the change of the character in the middle are directly related to the meaning to be said through the movie. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze, paying attention to the combination of the tragedy that works behind the scenes of everyday life and the comedy that works on the front, and the change of the character in the middle. By facing the comically embodied past, the audience laughs comfortably while maintaining an emotional distance from the situation of movies. However, as the characters change according to the flow of events, the direction of laughter changes. The audience, who was the subject of laughter, is reduced to an object of laughter and placed in a place of reflection. In the three films, laughter urges the audience to reflect on themselves based on this reversal. As a result, it can be said that Kim Hyun-seok's method of keeping distance through comedic imagery is effective in that it induces the audience's reflection on the tragic past.
