본 논문은 6･25전쟁 당시 유엔군의 일부로서 미 24사단이 수행한 천안～조치원 전투의 공훈자를 발굴하기 위한 연구이다. 유엔 참전용사들 중에서 공훈자를 발굴하기 위해 정부의 ‘훈장수여자 선정기준’, 전쟁기념관의 ‘호국인물 선정기준’, 보훈처의 ‘6·25전쟁영웅 선정기준’ 등을 참고하여 3가지 선정기준을 설정하였다. 이렇게 설정한 선정기준을 토대로 천안～조치원 지연작전에 참전한 유엔군 공훈자로 7명의 개인과 1개 소대를 발굴하였다. 6･25전쟁 중에서 천안～조치원 지연작전에 참전한 유엔군의 공훈자를 발굴한 이번 연구는 다음과 같은 세 가지 측면에서 의의가 있다. 첫째, 천안～조치원 지연작전간 UN군 공훈자 선정에 대한 기준을 정립하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 존경할 만한 공훈자를 선정하였다는 점에서 비교적 객관적으로 선정되었다고 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 성공하지 못한 전투로 인식되어 이 전투의 공훈자들도 덩달아 조명 받지 못하였지만 이번 연구를 통해 공훈자들을 발굴하고 그들의 공적을 알리는 계기가 되었다. 셋째, 일반 병사 또는 하급간부 등과 같이 전장의 제일선(第一線) 부대에서 적을 상대로 직접 전투를 수행한 인물들의 업적과 가치를 발굴할 수 있었다.
This study is a part of the researches for discovering the UN forces with honorable service during the Korean War, especially those who served in 24th division of U.S Army of which participated in the battle of Cheonan and Jochiwon. In order to discover them among the Korean War veterans of UN forces, 3 selective standards were set up and applied. These standards were inspired by governmental standard for patriot medal awards, War Memorial of Korea’s standard for awarding defender of nation, and the Ministry of Patriots-Veterans’ standard for selecting the Korean War veterans and heroes. Based on the standards, total 7 personnels and 1 platoon were discovered. As discovering UN forces with honorable service who participated in Cheonan and Jochiwon delayed operations, this study holds its significance in three aspects. First, this study established basic standard for selecting UN forces with honorable service in Cheonan and Jochiwon delayed operations. And by selecting them based on pre-established standards, those honorable veterans were selected fairly. Second, the participating veterans has not been recognized because the battle of Cheonan and Jochiwon was considered as unsuccessful mission. However, through this study, their honorable actions were discovered and known to the worlds. Third and lastly, this study was able to discover the value and achievements of low ranks military officials or ordinary soldiers who fought in front line.
