본고는 세계가 인정한 역사마을로서 안동의 하회마을이 갖는 의미, 즉 자연과 문화가 조화를 이룬 하회마을의 문화 정체성과 고유성과 역사성을 천착하는 데 주된 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 인본주의 지리학의 장소(성) 개념에 착안하여 논의를 진행했는데, 이 개념이 자연과 문화를 결합하여 역사마을로서 하회마을의 의미를 읽어내는 데 효과적이기 때문이다. 특히 하회의 대표 공간인 옥연(玉淵)과 그곳을 배경으로 이루어진 류성룡(柳成龍)의 활동 및 의미를 중심으로 논의를 진행하였다. 그 결과 안동의 하회마을은 오랫동안 우리나라를 대표하는 거주지이자 아름다운 자연경관으로 이름이 났을 뿐만 아니라, 서애 류성룡의 거주공간으로 상징화되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 그렇게 된 데에는 류성룡이 옥연을 중심으로 정사(精舍)와 소요처(逍遙處)를 마련하여 이름을 붙이고 책을 읽고 시를 짓는 등 다양한 활동을 통해 의미를 부여한 데서 비롯되었음을 알 수 있었다. 옥연의 자연경관과 옥연을 닮은 류성룡의 삶이 결합되어 하회의 장소성을 구성했던 것이다. 그리고 류성룡에 의해 의미를 부여받은 옥연과 주변 승경(勝景)들이 류성룡 사후에도 내부인과 외부인에 의해 지속적으로 장소로 체험됨으로써, 하회와 하회의 옥연이 류성룡의 상징공간으로 오랫동안 이해되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 최근까지 여러 연구를 통해 하회마을의 자연경관은 아주 잘 정리되어 있고 다양한 보존 방안까지 마련된 상태이다. 다만 이 경관들이 시간의 흐름 속에서도 장소의 특성을 유지하기 위해서는 하회를 찾는 사람들이 경관의 아름다움뿐 아니라 그 속에 담겨 있는 류성룡의 자취와 의미를 함께 체험할 필요가 있다. 하회가 오랫동안 조선에서 이름을 떨칠 수 있었던 것은 이러한 장소체험이 가능했기 때문이다. 이번 연구가 그 방안을 마련하는 기초가 되기를 기대해본다.
The main purpose of this study is to establish the cultural identity, uniqueness and historical characteristics of Hahoe Village, which harmonizes nature and culture. To this end, this study conducted discussions based on the concept of a place (a sense of Place) in Geography of Humanism because this concept is effective in combining nature and culture to read the meaning of Hahoe Village as a historical village. However, for the efficiency of the discussion, the discussion was centered on Okyeon, the representative space of Hahoe, and Ryu Seong-ryong's activities there, and Meaning given by Ryu Seong-ryong. As a result, it was confirmed that Hahoe Village in Andong has long been a representative residence of Korea and a beautiful natural landscape, as well as symbolized as a residential space of Ryu Seong-ryong. It was discovered that Ryu Seong-ryong gave meaning through various activities such as writing books and writing poems by preparing a house and a place of walking around Okyeon. The natural scenery of Okyeon and the life of Ryu Seong-ryong were combined to form a sense of place in Hahoe. As Okyeon and its surroundings, which were given meaning by Ryu Seong-ryong, were continuously experienced as places by insiders and outsiders after Ryu's death. it was confirmed that Okyeon of Hahoe and Hahoe was long understood as Ryu's symbolic space. Until recently, the natural scenery of Hahoe Village has been well organized through various studies. And various conservation measures are in place. However, to maintain the characteristics of the place despite the passage of time, people who visit Hahoe need to experience not only the beauty of the scenery but also the traces and meaning of Ryu Seong-ryong in it. Hahoe was able to make a name in Joseon for a long time because of this experience. We hope that this research will serve as the basis for preparing the plan.
