손보미의 소설집 『그들에게 린디합을』 속에 출현하는 각종의 사물과 물체들에는 그 물성(物性)의 기능을 초월하는 다양한 의미가 내포되어서 소설의 주제를 강화시켜 주는 모티프가 되고 있다. 이는 손보미 소설 특유의 생략 진술 기법에서 그 간극의 매개 역할을 함으로써 더욱 견고한 이야기 구조의 요소가 되며 서사를 발전시키고 있다. 본고는 그의 소설 속에 차용된 일상의 사물들이 은폐된 상황, 사건에 무언의 기호로서 작용하는 관계 양상에 대해 탐색한다. 담요와 잡지, 슈트케이스, 애드벌룬 등의 사물 배치를 통한 인물들의 결여와 상실감, 삶의 균열과 탈피 욕망 등의 상징과 환기의 매개체로서의 ‘모티프化’는 의외의 서사 진행과 ‘전복’의 효과를 낳는다. 이처럼 손보미 소설은 기존 한국 소설의 정형화를 벗어나는 시도로써 문학의 확장에 기여하는 새로운 작법의 제시가 되고 있다. 본 연구를 계기로 하여 다양한 변주를 담아내는 문학 및 타 장르 간의 상호 발전의 모색과 활발한 논의가 이어지기를 기대한다.
In Lindy Hop for Them, a collection of Son Bo-mi’s novels, all kinds of things and objects appear with various meanings beyond their physical properties connoted in them and serve as motifs to reinforce the themes of the novels. They play the roles of a medium to bridge a gap in the omission of statements technology, a characteristic of her novels, and contribute to the development of a narrative, thus becoming elements of a more solid story structure. Focusing on them, this study made an inquiry into the situations in which daily objects borrowed in her novels were covered up as silent signifiers and the relation networks that worked in events. Blankets, magazines, suitcases, and ad balloons are used as media and motifs to represent her characters’ deficiency, loss, crack in life, and desire for escape and bring in an unexpected narrative. This research on Son’s novels in which she tried a new technique is expected to create an opportunity to promote the mutual development of the literary genre containing various variations and the academic introduction.
