본 연구는 프랑수아 모리악의 작품에 나타난 멜랑콜리의 특징들을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 멜랑콜리가 상징하는 존재의 어두운 색조는 사실상 본질적인 결핍을 가진 인간의 비극적 상태를 의미한다. 이러한 점에서 멜랑콜리는 보편적 인간 조건의 구성요소이자, 인간을 탐구하는 모든 예술에서 공통적으로 찾아볼 수 있는 요소이기도 하다. 20세기 프랑스를 대표하는 기독교 작가인 프랑수아 모리악은 같은 계열의 다른 작가들과는 달리 고통과 고난, 죄와 어두움, 인간 존재의 비참한 상태에 집중했던 작가이다. 모리악의 주인공들은 한결같이 “사랑의 사막” 속에서 고통받는 자들이다. 그들은 사랑하는 대상을 상실하거나 욕망의 충족에 이르지 못하고 깊은 우울함과 슬픔 속에 빠진다. 그들은 타자와의 관계를 온전히 이루지 못하고, 자기 내면 속에 깊이 침잠하여 자기파괴적 삶을 살아간다. 때로 그들은 진리를 바라보는 비범하고 예리한 눈을 가지고 있지만, 집단의 규칙을 따르지 않는 성격으로 인해 더욱 깊은 고립에 빠지게 된다. 우리는 멜랑콜리 개념에서 파생되는 여러 의미들을 모리악의 작품 속 주요 인물들, 특히 모리악의 문학을 대표한다고 할 수 있는 테레즈 데케루라는 여주인공의 모습에 대입하여 분석해 보고자 한다. 또한 모리악의 작품을 통해 멜랑콜리의 부정적 의미와 긍정적 의미가 어떻게 변증법적 합일에 이를 수 있는지, 어둡고 우울한 감정의 특징이 어떻게 은총의 통로가 될 수 있는지를 살펴보게 될 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of melancholy in the works of François Mauriac. The dark tone of existence symbolized by melancholy actually signifies the tragic state of human beings with an essential deficiency. In this respect, melancholy is an element of the universal human condition, and also a common element found in all art that explores human beings. France's leading Christian writer in the 20th century, François Mauriac, unlike other writers of his type, was a writer who focused on pain and suffering, sin and darkness, and the wretched state of human existence. Mauriac's protagonists are always those suffering in the "desert of love". They lose their loved ones or fall into deep depression and sorrow without fulfilling their desires. They do not fully establish their relationship with others, and live a self-destructive life by sinking deep within themselves. Sometimes they have extraordinary, incisive eyes for the truth, but their disobedience to the rules of the group plunges them into deeper isolation. We would like to analyze the various meanings derived from the concept of melancholy by substituting the main characters in Mauriac's work, especially the female protagonist, Thérèse Desqueyroux, who can be said to represent Mauriac's literature. Also, through Mauriac's work, we will examine how the negative and positive meanings of melancholy can reach a dialectical unity, and how dark and depressing emotional characteristics can become channels of grace.
