This paper attempts to examine formation process of George Orwell’s political idea. He is a political writer basically belonging to a leftist(socialist). Nevertheless, critical evaluations on Orwell’s socialism are not only various but controversial among researchers on Orwell and his literature. For instance, they say Orwell does not systematize a theory of socialist thought. Therefore, the need to identify and examine the true nature of Orwell’s socialism is raised. The paper tries to identify Orwell’s socialism through his life experience and writings. To put it concretely, the paper presumes that Orwell’s socialism is tory anarchism and ethical socialism, and it divides four categories to identify his socialism, first, germinal and introduction stages of Orwell’s political idea: trauma as a victim of poverty and power, second, propulsion stage: sense of guilty as an assailant and atonement, third, a development stage: socialism propelled by Orwell’s class consciousness, fourth, completion state: Orwell’s ethical socialism.
