‘문학 작품의 현재적 가치 인식’은 효용론적 관점에 근거한 문학교육의 주요 교수·학습 내용 요소로서 현행 교육과정에서도 독립된 성취기준을 구성하고 있다. 현행 중학교 국어 교과서에서 해당 단원의 제재와 학습활동을 살펴보면, 문학 작품의 현재적 가치를 탐구하는 방식에는 크게 세 가지 유형이 있음을 알 수 있다. 첫 번째 유형은 시대를 초월한 보편적 가치에 초점을 맞추는 유형으로, 중심인물에 대한 작가의 가치 판단을 학습활동을 통해 확인하는 방식으로 작품의 현재적 가치가 도출된다. 두 번째 유형은 전통사회에서만 통용되었던 특수한 가치에 초점을 맞추어 이를 현대의 관점에서 비판하는 유형으로, 당대의 관습적 가치에 순응하여 행동하는 인물의 행위에 내포된 문제점을 현대인의 관점에서 분석하는 방식으로 작품의 현재적 가치를 밝힌다. 마지막 세 번째 유형은 과거를 배경으로 한 작품 속에서 현재에는 소멸된 가치를 찾아내어 그 중요성을 되새기고 현대 문명에 대한 반성을 유도하는 유형으로, 사회가 급변하면서 가치 풍토가 바뀌어 가는 과정을 묘사한 작품을 통해 전통적 삶의 가치가 상실되어 가는 과정을 조명하고 그것이 인간의 삶에 미치는 영향력을 성찰해 보게 하는 활동을 중심으로 작품의 현재적 가치를 탐구한다. 교과서의 제재와 학습활동은 문학 작품의 현재적 가치를 탐색하는 다양한 관점을 효과적으로 구현해 내고 있으나, 작품 속에 반영된 가치에 대한 명확한 시비 판단을 강조하는 과정에서 작품의 내용이 단순화되거나 왜곡되는 문제도 있었다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 세밀한 작품 읽기를 바탕으로 학습자의 기존 가치관을 정교화하고 다면화하는 활동들이 강화되어야 할 것이다. 아울러 작품의 현재적 가치를 학습자의 실제 삶 속에 적용하는 활동도 좀 더 확대될 필요가 있다.
Recognition of the present value of literary works is a major part of teaching and learning content in literary education based on the utility perspective, constituting an independent achievement- standard in the current curriculum. A review of content and learning activities in current middle school Korean textbooks shows that there are three ways to explore the present value of literary works. The first method focuses on universal values that transcend time, and the present value of the work is derived by confirming the author’s value judgment about the central characters. The second method focuses on special values that are valid only in a traditional society and critiques it from a modern perspective. This method reveals the present value of the work by analyzing the problems in the implied behavior of the character, conforming to the conventional value of their time, from a modern viewpoint. The third method involves finding a value that was extinguished in the past and reflecting on it from a modern civilization’s perspective. The third method explores the present value of the work by focusing on processes that lead to a loss of a traditional value such as the changes in the society and its influence on human life. Textbooks and their learning activities can be used to effectively explore various perspectives of the present value of literary works. However, this becomes problematic when the content of the works presented in them is simplified or distorted in the process of emphasizing the clear judgment of the values reflected in the works. To resolve this, activities that elaborate the existing multifaceted values in literary works should be strengthened for learners, such as detailed reading of literary works. These activities should be further expanded to enable learners to apply their actual life experiences to better understand the present value of literary works.
