창도(唱導)란 경전과 그 가르침을 쉽게 전달하기 위해 미묘한 음성을 통해 대중들로 하여금 신앙심을 일으키게 하는 설법이다. 땅설법은 영가나 불교초입자나 절행사를 구경하러 온 이들에게 불교의 의례와 문화를 소개하고 부처님 말씀을 전하기 위해 하는 것이다. 이는 중세 이후 중국과 한국, 일본에서 크게 유행했다. 우리의 경우 조선조 이후 불교의 쇠퇴로 점차 사라져 일부 사찰에서 이어오는 듯했다. 그러다 최근 삼척 안정사에서 땅설법이 전해오고 있음이 확인되었다. 이 땅설법은 무명스님(1910-1988) 외, 운성스님 그리고 안정사 창건주 대법스님으로부터 땅설법의 다양한 기예를 전수받아 다여스님이 연행하고 있는 설법이다. 따라서 이는 긴 세월을 지내오는 동안 많은 기복과 변천을 거듭하면서 창출 형성된 설법으로, 또다른 한국식의 독특한 예술성과 가치를 지닌 창도문화이다. 연희 면에서 최정여가 전해준 땅설법처럼 해학과 재담이 곁들인 형식으로 진행되지만, 전문소리꾼이나 줄광대나 민요가수가 공연해서는 안되며 고수도 따로 두지 않는다. 변죽만 쳐야 된다. 부처님 앞에서 세속적인 흥미나 즐거움을 지나치게 유발해서는 안된다는 것이다. 이러한 절대성은 일본의 <절담설교(絶談說敎)>와 대비되는 대목이다. 필수 연행 도구인 <변상도(變相圖)>를 비롯해, 5종의 경전인 <석가모니일대기(釋迦牟尼一代記)>, <목련존자일대기(目連尊者一代記)>, <선재동자구법기(善財童子求法記)>, <성주신일대기(成造神一代記)>, <신중신일대기(神衆神一代記)>와 함께, <안락국태자경(安樂國太子經)>, <태자수나경(太子須大拏經)>, <삼한세존일대기(三韓世尊一代記)>, 그리고 인형극 <위제희부인만원연기(韋提希夫人滿願緣起)>와 그림자인형극 <만석중득도기(曼碩衆得道記)>는 이제껏 보지 못했던 것으로 안정사 특히 다여스님과 신도가 함께하는 보물이다. 이것만으로도 안정사 땅설법은 보존 가치가 충분하다.
Changdo(唱導) is the sermon that arouses faith to the public through subtle voices in order to convey the scriptures and the teachings easily. This had been very popular in China, Korea, and Japan since the Middle Ages. Sokgang(俗講) in China and Edoki in Japan belong to Changdo. In case of Korea, due to the decline of Buddhism from the Joseon Dynasty, Changdo disappeared gradually and some temples seemed to continue the sermon. Recently, however, it is confirmed that Ground Sermon is handed down to Anjeongsa Temple in Samcheock. Ground Sermon is the same as Sokgang and Edoki(繪解), which are used to introduce Buddhism rituals and cultures and convey the sayings of Buddha to those who come to see temple events or Buddhist beginners. This Ground Sermon is currently performed by Monk Dayeo who learned diverse techniques of Ground Sermon from Monk Mumyeong(1910-1988), Monk Unseong, and Monk Daebeob, the founder of Anjeongsa Temple. From that, we can see that the sermon has been created through many changes and fluctuation over a long period of time, and it is the Changdo culture with unique Korean artistry and value. Ground Sermon goes on in the form of humor and jokes, but it should not be performed by professional singers, tightrope clowns, or folk singers and there is no separate drummer. It is said that worldly enjoyment should not be shown excessively in front of Buddah. Its absolute form compares with Japanese <Jeoldamseolgyo(絶談說敎)> which is delivered interestingly with melodies. The remarkable works–an essential performance tool <Byeonsangdo>, Five types of scriptures, <Seokgamoni Biography>, <Mokryeon Jonja Biography>, <Seonjae Dongja Kubeobgi>, <Seongjusin Biography>, <Sinjungsin Biography>, <Anlakkuk Taeja Kyeong>, <Taejasuna Kyeong>, <Samhansejon Biography>, the puppet show <Wijaehui Buin Manwonyeonki>, the shadow puppet show <Manseokjung Dukdogi>–have never been seen before, and are treasures that Monk Dayeo and Buddhists of Anjeongsa Temple perform together. With this alone, Ground Sermon is well worth preserving.
