아리스토텔레스는 인간의 성품은 이미 타고난다고 말한다. 그는 타고난 성품만으로 온전한 성품에 도달할 수 없다고 말한다. 그렇다면 온전한 성품은 어떻게 갖출 수 있는 것인가? 탁월성은 일시적이거나 순간적인 변화에 의해 만들어지지 않는다. 성품의 탁월성에 이르는 길은 순식간에 일어나는 것이 아니라 지속적인 습관이나 실천적 지혜를 통해 절제된 삶을 살아갈 때 터득할 수 있다. 그는 한 마리의 제비가 여름을 만드는 것이 아니라고 말한다. 성품의 탁월성은 지속적인 노력이 이어질 때 가능하다. 아리스토텔레스는 사람은 타고난 성품에 머물러서는 안 되고, 만약 우리가 여기에서 멈춘다면 도덕적 성품을 갖추지 못한 유아기적 단계에 머물게 될 것이라고 말한다. 그는 우리가 본성의 덕에 머물러서는 안 되고, 자연적 탁월성에서 성격적 탁월성으로 이행되어야 한다고 말한다. 그리고 그는 우리가 도달해야 할 궁극적인 목표는 지적 탁월성이라고 말한다. 우리가 지적 탁월성에 이르기 위해서는 실천적 지혜를 통해서 도달할 수 있다고 말한다. 또한 아리스토텔레스는 우리가 공동체에서 함께 살아가기 위해서는 지적 탁월성이 필요하다고 말한다. 우리가 공동체에서 올바른 결정을 내리고 동시에 바른 행위를 하기 위해서 우리는 개인의 본성을 잘 작용하게 하는 ‘실천적 지혜’ 를 필요로 한다. 사회 구성원이 성격적 탁월성을 갖추고 이에 더 나아가 실천적 지혜를 갖추게 되면 눈에 띄는 도덕적 성품을 지니게 될 것이다. 끝으로 아리스토텔레스는 현대인들에게 도덕적 성품에 대해 말한다. 그는 우리가 타고난 성품에 머물러 있지 않고 지속적인 훈련을 통해 도덕적 성품을 만들어가야 한다고 말한다. 지적 탁월성을 소유한 사회 구성원들은 모인 사회는 도덕적으로도 더욱 성숙하게 될 것이다.

Aristotle says that human character is already innate. He said that innate character alone cannot reach full character. If so, how can one be equipped with a perfect character? The excellence of character is not created by temporary or instantaneous change. The road to the excellence of character does not happen in an instant, but can be learned by living a restrained life through continuous habits or practical wisdom. He says that one swallow doesn't make summer. The excellence of character is possible when continuous effort is followed. Aristotle says that human should not remain at his innate character, and if we stop here, we will be at the stage of infancy where he do not have a moral character. He says that we must not remain by virtue of nature, but must move from natural excellence to character excellence. And he says that the ultimate goal we have to reach is intellectual excellence. To reach intellectual excellence, he says, we can reach it through practical wisdom. Aristotle also says that we need intellectual excellence in order to live together in community. In order for us to make the right decisions in the community and at the same time do the right things, we need “Phronesis(practical wisdom)” to make the individual nature work well. When a member of society is equipped with personal excellence and Phronesis, they will have outstanding moral character. Finally, Aristotle tells modern people about moral character. He says that we should not stay in our innate character but develop a moral character through continuous training. A society where members of a society with intellectual excellence are gathered will become more morally mature.
