이 논문은 1763년 계미통신사의 일원으로 참가했던 崔英泰(1723∼?)의 일본 사행록 『東槎紀行』의 일본 체험이 지닌 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 저자는 格軍으로 참가했다가 盤纏次知로 職役을 변경했던 인물이다. 『동사기행』은 格軍으로 참여했던 작자가 통신사행 동안 관찰하고 경험했던 내용을 매우 진솔하게 기록하게 두었다는 점에서 주목되는 바, 통신사행단 참가 인원 중에서 중하층의 職役을 담당했던 인물들이 어떠한 관심과 의식지향을 보였는가를 파악하는 데에 기여할 것으로 생각된다. 작자는 일본 사행 중 민간인과의 접촉이 엄격하게 통제된 가운데 여러 일본인들과 만났는데, 특히 일본 중하층 인물들과 활발하게 접촉을 하고 교류를 가졌다. 이 점이 『동사기행』의 독특한 면모이다. 통신사 일행을 호위, 응대하는 일본의 중하층 인물들과의 접촉과 교류를 일화 중심으로 흥미롭게 묘사하였으며, 때로는 일본 민가의 한 처녀와의 외설스러운 장면을 가감 없이 다루기도 하였다. 또한 『동사기행』은 매우 잡다하고 다양한 소재와 사건들을 다루었으며, 일본의 제도와 문물, 학술, 외교 문제 등에 대해서는 거의 언급하지 않았다. 주로 일본에 와서 그곳 현지 사람들과 접촉하고 부딪히면서 자신이 보고 들었던 일들, 자신이 직접 겪은 사건 혹은 일화들을 상세하게 기록하는 데에 중점을 두었다. 작자는 일본을 교화의 대상으로 바라보거나 문화적 우위의 시선에서 파악하고자 하는 태도 등은 보이지 않는다. 일본에 대한 보다 현실적이며 객관적인 시선을 엿볼 수 있다. 그러한 점에서 『동사기행』은 특별하고 신기한 이국 체험의 견문기라고 할 수 있다.
This paper was focused on explaining the author and Japanese experience of 『Dongsagihaeng』, the record of Joseon Tongsinsa. It is worth noting that it was written by a person who was in charge of the lower ranks of the news agency. Because their social status was different and their positions and roles within the news agency were also different, there were considerable differences in their views and attitudes toward Japan, as well as the subjects and subjects of the narrative. 『Dongsagihaeng』 dealt with very miscellaneous and diverse subjects and events. Things that were not mentioned otherwise in other news agencies are very interestingly described in 『Dongsagihaeng』. While traveling in Japan, Choi Youngtae wanted to record all the bizarre landscapes, events, and episodes. Based on his strong curiosity about foreign landscapes, he also introduced trivial and everyday materials into his work. Instead, he made little mention of Japan's institutions, culture, academics, and foreign affairs. He mainly focused on recording in detail the things he saw and heard, the incidents or episodes he had personally experienced while coming to Japan, contacting and colliding with the local people there. Also, there is no attitude to view Japan as an object of edification or to grasp it from the perspective of cultural superiority. You can get a glimpse of a more realistic and objective view of Japan. It can be said that 『Dongsagihaeng』 is a story of special and strange foreign experiences.
