본고는 사람을 가리키는 ‘-장이/-쟁이’ 파생어를 대상으로 어기의 의미 부류에 따라 파생어의 의미가 어떻게 확장되어 쓰이는지 살펴보았다. ‘-장이’는 [X-장(匠)]-이 > X-[-장이]의 재구조화 과정을 통해 접미사가 되었으며 “수공업에 종사하는 기술을 가진 사람”에 한정하여 쓰인다. ‘-장이’는 다양한 어기에 결합하여 ‘기술자, 직업인’의 의미를 지니며 이 의미가 ‘-쟁이’ 파생어에도 확대되어 쓰인다. ‘그림쟁이’류는 ‘-장이’와의 의미적 관련성을 유지하여 ‘직업’과 ‘전문인’의 의미를 이어받는다. 여기에 ‘-장이’가 지닌 ‘기술자’의 의미에서 사회적인 평가를 반영한 ‘비하’의 의미 자질이 추가된다. ‘거짓말쟁이’류는 ‘-장이’가 지닌 직업의 의미에서 습관적 행위의 의미로 확대되어 쓰이고 ‘무식쟁이’류는 사람의 특성이나 속성을 나타낸다. 사람의 특성을 나타내는 부류의 어기는 상태(‘무식쟁이’), 성질(‘꼼꼼쟁이’), 종교(‘동학쟁이’), 병명(‘매독쟁이’), 구체물(‘갓쟁이’) 등 다양하다. ‘영감쟁이’류는 어기인 ‘영감’과 파생어 ‘영감쟁이’의 지시 대상이 동일하며 ‘비하’의 의미뿐만 아니라 친밀한 관계에서 쓸 수 있는 ‘친밀 지칭’의 의미를 부가한다. 최근 조어된 ‘끼쟁이, 인기쟁이’ 등에도 ‘친밀 지칭’의 의미 자질이 있는 것으로 해석된다. 신어에서 발견되는 ‘-쟁이’ 파생어의 특징은 기존의 ‘-장이’ 파생어까지 포괄하여 형태가 ‘-쟁이’로 통일되는 경향이 있고(‘매듭쟁이’) 전문인과 열정의 의미를 추가하면서 평가상으로 개량적 의미 변화를 겪는 것으로 볼 수 있다.
This paper focuses on ‘-jang-i/-jaeng-i’ derivatives denoting humans, and aims to explain the semantic extension in terms of semantic classes of their bases. ‘-jang-i’ was rendered into suffix through the restructuring from [X-jang(匠)]-i to X-[-jang-i], and semantically confined to “practitioners engaged in manual industry”. ‘-jang-i’ combines with various word bases and denotes ‘technician, skilled worker’, which applies to ‘-jaeng-i’ derivatives. The type of ‘geurim-jaeng-i’ maintains semantic relatedness with ‘-jang-i’ while keeping the meaning of ‘vocation’, ‘technician’. Added to these meanings, some disparaging meaning derives from ‘technician’ meaning of ‘jang-i’. The type of ‘geojitmal-jaeng-i’ went through the semantic extension from vocational meaning of ‘-jang-i’ to the meaning of habitual acts, while the type of ‘musik-jaeng-i’ represented the human characteristics or properties. The latter type has various word bases such as state(‘musik-jaeng-i’), character(‘ggomggom-jaeng-i’), belief(‘donghak-jaeng-i’), disease(‘maedok-jaeng-i’), commodity(‘gat-jaeng-i’) etc. The type of ‘yeonggam- jaeng-i’ has the same referent with the base ‘yeonggam’, but has overtone of familiarity furthermore. This overtone of familiarity also appears in the newly coined words such as ‘ggi-jaeng-i, ingi-jaeng-i’ etc. The distinctive features of newly coined ‘-jaeng-i’ derivatives are such that their morphological shapes are unified into ‘-jaeng-i’ forms including the former ‘jang-i’ derivatives (ex. ‘maedeup-jaeng-i’) and underwent an ameliorative semantic change through adding the meanings of professionalism, zealousness to them.
