본 연구는 한국형 괴물이라 할 수 있는 불가사리의 의미와 특성을 문헌을 통해 살펴본다. 본 연구의 목적은「숑도말년 불가살이젼」과 북한 영화 <불가사리>를 기반으로 스토리텔링의 특성과 상징적 의미를 고찰한다. 이와 아울러 일반적인 불가사리 이야기의 서사적 특성을살펴보고, 북한 영화 불가사리를 통해서 드러난 봉건체제의 비판과 아울러 서사 과정으로서의 통과의례의 가치를 살펴보고자 한다. 연구결과 및 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 「숑도말년 불가살이젼」의 내용은 불가사리가쇠를 먹을 뿐만이 아니라, 불을 통한 통과의례를 거쳐서조선왕조를 개국하는 데에 큰 공로를 세운다는 서사적인 통과의례의 특징이 잘 나타나고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 이와 함께 북한에서 제작된 거대 괴수 영화로서의<불가사리>는 고전에서 내려오는 불가사리 민담을 영화화한 작품이다. 이 영화는 왕권 중심의 봉건체제를 날카롭게 비판하고 있지만, 그 서사적인 가치는 가족의 중요성과 더불어서 서사의 단계별 통과의례를 설정하여, 내러티브의 구조적 긴장감을 고조시킨다. 즉 북한의<불가사리> 영화 역시, 영웅소설의 서사적 구조처럼, 영웅이 불, 물, 나무, 쇠, 흙의 통과의례를 겪듯이, 불가사리도 단계별 통과의례를 겪게 된다. 셋째, 본 연구에서는 미디어콘텐츠에 투영된 방송드라마, 웹툰, 출판물 등다양한 불가사리의 모습을 고찰하고, 문화원형으로서의이미지가 말레이맥과도 많은 관계가 있음을 살펴봤다. 본 연구는 다학제적 연구로서, 문화원형을 기반으로 한 콘텐츠 기획과 캐릭터 제작에 많은 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.
This study examines the meaning and characteristics of Korean-style monsters through literature. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and symbolic meaning of storytelling based on “The Last Year of Songdo, Bulgasari” and North Korean movie “Bulgasari”. In addition, we would like to examine the epic characteristics of the general Bulgasari story, the criticism of the feudal system revealed through the North Korean film Bulgasari, and the value of the rite of passage as an epic process. The research results and contents are as follows. First, the contents of “The Last Year of Songdo, Bulgasari” are characterized by the epic rite of passage, in which Bulgasari not only eat iron but also make a great contribution to the founding of the Josun Dynasty through fire. Second, "Bulgasari" as a monster film produced in North Korea is a film version of a Bulgasari folk tale that comes down from classics. While the film sharply criticizes the monarchy-centered feudal system, its epic value, in addition to the importance of family, sets the narrative's step-by-step rite of passage, heightening the structural tension of narratives. In other words, just like the epic structure of a hero's novel, the North Korean movie Bulgasari goes through the rite of passage of fire, water, wood, iron, and soil, so does the Bulgasari go through the rite of passage step by step. Third, in this study, we considered various Bulgasari such as broadcast dramas, webtoons, and publications projected on media contents, and examined that their image as a cultural prototype has a lot to do with Malay Mac. This study is a multidisciplinary study, and we expect that it will be very helpful in planning content based on cultural archetypes and producing characters.
