교육부가 미래형 교육과정으로 추진하고 있는 2022년 개정 교육과정의 중점 과제는 학습자 주도의 개별화된 맞춤형 교육과정을 설계하는 것이다. 본 연구는 학생 개별 맞춤형 교육을 초등영어 교과에서 구현하기 위해서는 영어교육의 새로운 패러다임이 필요함을 이론적 논증을 통하여 주장하고, 나아가 이 새로운 패러다임에 부합하는 구체적인 교수·학습 방안으로 영어책 읽듣기 학습법을 제안한다. 먼 저, 미래형 초등영어 교육과정의 패러다임은 다음과 같은 방향으로 전환되어야 한다. 첫째, 초등영어 교육의 목표는 의사소통 능력의 함양보다는 영어 기초실력 향상에 초점을 두어야 한다. 둘째, 교육 내 용은 생활영어를 가르치는 기능 중심의 교수요목에서 내용 중심의 교수요목으로 전환하고, 학습자의 성장 및 미래 역량 개발에 필요한 인지·학습 영어 능력을 키우는 방향으로 거시적인 관점에서 설계되 어야 한다. 셋째, 중점 언어 기능은 현행 듣기/말하기 중심에서 읽기/듣기 중심의 교육으로 전환해야 하며, 말하기와 쓰기는 읽기/듣기와 연계하여 통합적으로 가르쳐야 한다. 넷째, 교육 방법은 PPP 수업 모형을 사용하여 영어를 가르치는 교사 주도의 영어교육법에서 벗어나 이해 가능한 입력을 최대한 제 공하여 학습자 주도로 영어를 배울 수 있도록 교수·학습 방법을 전환해야 한다. 다섯째, 영어 학습 교 재는 국가의 관리 하에 제작된 교과서에 얽매이지 않고 다양한 자료를 학습자의 수준과 흥미에 맞게 활용할 수 있도록 교사에게는 자율권을 부여하고 학생에게는 선택권을 주어야 한다. 본 연구는 이러한 새로운 패러다임에 부합하는 한 가지 방안으로 영어책 읽듣기 학습법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 눈으로는 영어책을 읽고 귀로는 동시에 오디오 음원을 들음으로써 읽기와 듣기를 동시에 배우는 자기 주도적 학 습법인데, 학생들은 이를 통하여 영어 기초실력을 탄탄히 다질 뿐만 아니라 미래 역량을 키울 수 있다.
The Ministry of Education recently announced the new direction of the revised curriculum for 2022. The main task of the future-oriented curriculum is to design a learner-led personalized curriculum. This study argues that the current paradigm of primary English education needs to be changed in order to implement the personalized curriculum successfully. Specifically, this study proposes that the new paradigm of primary English education needs to meet the following conditions. First, the goal of primary English education should be set on improving the basic English ability necessary for developing learners’ future competencies rather than on communication skills. Second, English education should be geared up for promoting cognitive/academic English proficiency rather than for everyday English proficiency so that the students are able to develop their future competencies. Third, the priority of language function should be given to reading and listening rather than to speaking, and speaking and writing should be taught in conjunction with listening and reading. Fourth, the approach to English education should be shifted to student-led learning from teacher-led teaching. Fifth, English learning materials should be provided which reflect learners’ levels and interests. Finally, as a model of individual customized English education for the new paradigm, this study proposes an English Book ReaStening approach. Through the approach, students can solidify their basic English skills and develop their future competencies.
