본고는 해체 종결어미 ‘-게’의 용법을 일별하여 이들이 서로 다른 두 기원에 연원함을 주장한 것이다. 해체 종결어미 ‘-게’는 {화행의 목적}, {의도}, {역설적 의도}, {인식적 판단 근거}, {알아맞히기 유도}의 기능을 보인다. {인식적 판단 근거}는 다시 ‘근거’의 성격에 따라 {사실적 판단 근거}와 {반사실적 판단 근거}로 나뉜다. {화행의 목적}과 {의도}, {역설적 의도}는 연결어미 ‘-게’의 {목적} 용법에서 발달하였다. 반면 {인식적 판단 근거}와 {알아맞히기 유도}는 연결어미 ‘-기에’에 그 연원이 있다. {목적}의 연결어미 ‘-게’는 {화행의 목적}을 제시하는 종결어미로 발달한 후 일반 행위의 목적을 제시하는 데에도 사용되면서 선행 화행과 관련을 맺지 않고 1인칭의 {의도}를 진술하거나 2인칭의 {의도}를 질문하는 기능으로 발달하였다. 이로부터 {역설적 의도}의 ‘-게’도 발달한 것으로 보인다. 한편 {인식적 판단 근거}의 종결어미 ‘-게’는 {판단의 근거}를 나타내는 ‘-기에’의 용법, 즉 인식적 층위의 이유를 나타내는 용법과 일맥상통한다. {알아맞히기 유도}는 ‘-기에’의 화행적 접속 기능, 즉 발화 행위의 이유를 나타내는 기능으로부터 시작하여 담화 상황에서 이루어진 행위의 이유를 나타내는 용법으로 발달하면서 등장한다. 본고는 이러한 두 종류의 해체 종결어미 ‘-게’에 대해 ‘의도’류와 ‘근거’류로 구분하였다. 이는 개념(출발점 vs. 도착점), ‘-었-’ 결합 가능성, 대치 가능한 어미 목록을 기준으로 한 것으로 ‘-기에’와 {근거}류 ‘-게’의 유사성을 보여 주는 구획이기도 하다. 또 20세기 자료에서 연결어미 ‘-기에’임이 분명한데 ‘게’로 실현된 예들이 다수 관찰되는 것도 {근거}류 ‘-게’가 ‘-기에’에서 발달했을 가능성을 보여 준다.
This paper investigates the etymologies of a Hay style sentence ender -key. It has several usages: speech-act level purpose, intention, counter-factual intention, basis for epistemic judgement, and quiz question; the basis for epistemic judgement usage can be further devided into factual epistemic judgement and counter-factual epistemic judgement depending on the character of the basis. It is highly likely that the speech-act level purpose, the intention and the counter-factual intention usages have developed from -key, a connective ending. The latter two, the basis for epistemic judgement and the quiz question usages have originated from -kiey, also a connective ending. The purpose usage of the connective –key has evolved to a sentence ender presenting speech-act level purpose. The speech-act level purpose usage has developed a tendency to signal the speech-act level purpose of the addresser when the utterance is a statement, or that of addressee when the utterance is a polar question. This new sentence ender has extended its usages to present purpose of action in general not speech-act. The counter-factual intention usage seems to have arisen following that development. On the other hand, the basis for epistemic judgement usage appears to be parallel with the connective -kiey in that it denotes the reason for judgement at the epistemic level. The quiz question usage is thought to have surfaced from speech-act level connection of -kiey, starting from presenting the reason for the utterance in question, and to addressing the reason for the actions that are being made while the discourse is in progress. This paper separates the usages of the Hay style sentence ender -key into two groups: the intention group for the intention usage and the counter-factual intention usage, and the basis group for the basis for epistemic judgement usage and the quiz question usage. This categorization is not random: the usages differ in terms of conception(starting point vs. targeting point), compatibility with the past tense marker -ess, and the list of subtitutable endings. This distinction holds for revealing the close relation between the basis group -key and the connective –kiey. Plus, 20th century texts showing that quite many examples of -key are actually a shortened form of the connentive -kiey also supports the hypothesis that the basis group -key developed from the connective -kiey.
