현대 한국정치에 있어서 진보와 보수는 최근 대결양상을 뛰어넘어 사회갈등, 더 나아가 사회분열을 촉발하고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 그런 분열의 원인 중 하나가 진보에 대한 반동적 성격일 수 있다는 합리적 비판을 바탕으로 계몽과 진보의 관계를 영웅주의적 관점에서 파악하려 한다. 조선 말 근대화시기에 사상적 계보로서 한국사회에 첫발을 내디딘 계몽은 1980년대 이후 표면적으로는 사라진 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 계몽은 완전히 사라진 것이 아니라 현대의 진보 속에 그 흔적을 남기었다. 계몽의 주창자들은 새로운 지식을 매개로 자신의 이익, 더 나아가 생명마저도 기꺼이 희생하는 영웅적 행동의 수행자로 스스로를 자리매김하였고, 이런 현상은 계몽이라는 용어를 더 이상 사용하지 않는 현대의 진보진영 측에서도 여전히 일정 수준 발견되고 있기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 계몽과 진보는 자기희생이나 자기이익의 포기, 그리고 지식의 독점에서 비롯되는 문화적 계급질서에 기반을 두고 있는데, 이는 고전영웅의 행적과 밀접한 연관성을 드러낸다. 본 연구는 이런 관계를 이론적으로 추적할 것이며 진보에 국한된 이런 시도가 현대 한국사회의 분열 양상을 조금이라도 완화할 수있는 이론적 토대가 되기를 기대한다.
Political battles between progressives[liberals] and conservatives in Korean politics seem to precipitate a social conflict as well as a social cleavage beyond the aspect of confrontation in recent times. In this context, based on the rational criticism that such conflict may result from a negative reaction to progressives, this study aims to apprehend the relationship between progressivism and enlightenment on the perspective of heroism. The enlightenment movement took its first step as a pedigree of thought in the end of the Joseon period in Korea and has seemed to vanish since the 1980s. Nevertheless, the enlightenment did not completely disappear and rather left its trace in the midst of modern progressives. The cohorts of the enlightenment defined themselves as practicians of heroic act, armed with new knowledge, who were willing to sacrifice their interests or even their own lives, and such phenomenon is still found to a certain degree within today’s progressives who do no longer use the term of enlightenment. In other words, enlightenment and progressivism depend on cultural hierarchy derived from self-sacrifice, renunciation of self-interest, and monopoly of knowledge, which reveals a close relation with the trajectory of classical heroes. Although this research, which focusing on the liberal or progressive circle, traces this relation theoretically, it expects to provide the theoretical basis to help mitigate the conflicts lurked in Korean society.
