이 연구는 고려 후기의 불교계 고승 보각국사 일연의 대중교화적 관점을 『삼국유사』 「감통」편에서 제시하려는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 「감통」편은 다양한 발원자들의 지극정성에 불보살이 감응하여 영험과 가피를 내려준다는 불교 신앙과 인과에 관한 신이한 이야기만을 따로 편재하여 주목했다. 민중들은 이러한 이야기들에 감동하여 구원의 믿음과 희망을 품었을 것이다. 또 「감통」편의 불교신이는 유교와는 다른 지향점을 보여주는 것이며, 그 안에 주인공들도 다양한 신분으로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 점은 곧 우리 민중들이 삶이 주인공이라는 것을 일깨워 주려는 것이다. 일연은 가지산문의 선승이었지만 「감통」편에는 선사로서의 일연의 모습은 보이지 않는다. 선정의 힘이나 어려운 불교 교리보다는 재미난 불교 신앙과 신이한 내용을 이야기 방식으로 서술하며 대중성을 지향하고 있다. 마치 선사의 모습을 보살행으로 승화하고 회향시키는 모습처럼, 오로지 중생교화에 매진하는 대승보살행 정신의 면모를 발견할 수 있다.
The purpose of this study is to present the viewpoint of popularization of Ven. Bogak (普覺) Iryeon in the late Goryeo period in the "Gamtong (感通 The response by the buddhas and bodhisattvas to the condition of sentient beings.)" chapter of the Samguk Yusa). The chapter of "Gamtong (「感通」)" focused on the miraculous stories of Buddhist faith and causality those are the responses by the buddhas and bodhisattvas to the offerings of various prayers. The people would have been moved by these stories and had faith and hope of salvation. In addition, the miracles (神異) in the "Gamtong (感通)" chapter show a different orientation from Confucianism, and the main characters are composed of various statuses. This reminds us that the general public is the protagonist (主人公) in life. Although Ven. Iryeon was a Seon monk of Gajisanmun (迦智山門), there is no character of Seon master in the "Gamtong (感通)" chapter. It aims at popularity by describing interesting Buddhist faith and miracles (佛敎神異) in story-tellings way rather than the power of meditation or difficult Buddhist doctrines teaching. However, like the image of Seon master through these story-tellings, we can find the aspect of the practices of Mahayana bodhisattvas (大乘菩薩行), which is devoted to the sublimated act of the bodhisattvas dedication.
