The study examined the frequency of English aspectual adverbs in a native speaker corpus and Korean EFL college learners’ understanding about the use of these adverbs. For the study, the British National Corpus was used, and 44 learners participated in an online survey. Based on the classification of adverbs associated with the verb tense-aspect system (Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman 2016), the findings revealed that the frequency data from the BNC was different from the use of adverbs of tense and time according to Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (2016). However, Korean EFL learners’ understanding of these adverbs was consistent with what Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman pointed out. They followed more prescriptive rules of English than data in the BNC. By presenting different distributions of corpus analysis and survey data, this study provided information that may help linguists and teachers of English improve their understanding and teaching of these adverbs.
