한국 가톨릭계 대학은 제삼천년기를 맞아 가톨릭 정체성을 잃지 않으면서 한국 사회와 교육계의 요구를 수용하는 길을 모색하고 있다. 그 노력의 일환으로 가톨릭계 대학의 전인교육 현황과 방향성을 숙고하고 설정하는 작업이 필요하다. 본고에서는 교회 문헌에 나오는 인격 개념을 기반으로 가톨릭계 대학이 추구해야 할 전인교육의 방향성이 논의된다. 필자는 먼저 교회 문헌에 나타난 인격 개념을 기반으로 전인교육을 인격의 의식 성숙과 인격의 성장 및 완성 추구를 목표로 하는 교육으로 정의한다. 이는 인격의 본질적이며 주체적인 측면을 다루는 ‘인격의 의식 성숙’과, 인격의 관계적이며 역동적인 측면을 다루는 ‘인격의 성장과 완성’을 두 가지 주제로 삼는 교육이다. 이어서 필자는 전인교육의 세 가지 세부 주제를 설정하여 그 주제에 맞는 교육을 제안한다. 세 가지 세부 주제는 인격의 속성과 연관되는 소명성(vocationality)과 친교성(communality), 그리고 이들의 바탕이 되는 속성인 영성(spirituality)이다. 한국 가톨릭계 대학은 자신의 고유성과 가톨릭 정체성을 유지하면서 각자의 방식에 따라 이를 교육 주제로 하는 전인교육을 추구하고 전인교육의 주체가 되는 기관을 설정·운영해 나가야 할 것이다. 이를 통해 가톨릭계 대학의 전인교육은 가톨릭 영성을 바탕으로 생명을 보호하고 사랑을 실천하는 인격, 성숙한 소명의식으로 인간의 존엄성과 자유를 증진시키고 진리를 추구하는 전문인, 자기-증여로 인격의 완성을 추구하며 공동체와 인류에 봉사하고 소통하는 지도자를 양성하는 교육이 될 것이다.
Catholic universities in the third millennium make an effort to accept the demands of social and educational circles in Korea, trying not to lose their Catholic identity. In a bid, it is necessary to deliberate the current state of the Whole Person Education in Catholic universities and establish an educational direction. This study discusses the direction of the Whole Person Education based on the notion of Person in the Catholic Church’s Documents. As a result, the Whole Person Education is defined as the one pursuing the maturation of the Person’s consciousness as well as growth and perfection of the Person. This definition deals with two aspects of the Person: the maturing of the Person’s consciousness from the essential and subjective aspect of the Person; the growth and perfection of the Person from its relational and dynamic aspect. This study also suggests three specific themes of the education in relation to the three attributes of the Person; vocationality, communality, and spirituality as the basis of the two attributes. Catholic universities in Korea should find their own way to provide the Whole Person Education with these themes while maintaining their originality and Catholic identity. They also should found an institution that operates the Whole Person Education. In so doing, the Whole Person Education in Catholic universities will foster a person who protects and loves life and practices charity on the basis of Catholic spirituality, a professional who promotes human dignity and freedom while pursuing the truth with the mature consciousness of vocation, and a leader who perfects the Person by self-giving as a gift and serves local communities as well as humankind.
