이 연구는 고금세계부호전집의 분석을 통해 새무엘 스마일즈의 자조론 추종자인 미국의 공학 대부 오리슨 스웨트 마든이 주장한 성공주의가 식민지 조선에수용되는 과정과 그 의미를 검토한 것이다. 이 책의 가장 중요한 특징은 마든의 저서가 「마-덴 박사 입신성공법강화」로 중역되어 부록으로 첨부된 점이다. 고금세계부호전집은 발간사와 서·본문·부록의 세 부분으로 구성되었는데, 부록의 저자 마든이 주장한 성공주의는 이근택이 저술한 발간사와 서 및 본문 구성에 반영되었다. 고금세계부호전집의 본문은 실업의 영역에서 치부성공한 인물들을 ‘○○왕’으로호명한 열전으로 구성되었으며, 이것은 마든 출판물에 영향받아 출간된 일본의 각종 실업부호전을 번역하거나 참고한 것이었다. 한편 이근택은 ‘발간사’와 ‘서’에서 식민지 조선 청년을 대상으로 실업이라는 직업의 영역에서 치부 성공할 것을 주장하였는데, 「마-덴 박사 입신성공법강화」은 이러한 그의 주장에 주요 근거로써 활용되었다. 요컨대 이 연구는 한국 사회에 마든의 성공주의가 유통되는 과정을 살펴본 첫 시도라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 특히 고금세계부호전집의 분석을 통해, 이 책이 식민지조선 청년이 자본주의화 되어가는 식민지 현실에 적응할 수 있도록 하는 자기계발서로서 기획·출간되었음을 밝혔다는 점에서 그 의의가 적지 않을 것이다.
This study examines the meaning of the successism of Orison Swett Marden propagated in Korea through Biography of the world’s rich past and present published by Lee Geun-taek in the 1920s and 1930s. The most important feature of this book is the translation of Marden’s book and included as an appendix. Marden was a follower of Self-Help. After the 1900s, many business biographies were published in Japan under the influence of Marden’s Publications. The main text of Biography of the world’s rich past and present was selected and edited from such a biography of a businessman. Above all, The main text of this book is composed of rich men, called ‘○○ king.’ In addition, in the foreword of this book, Lee Geun-taek insisted that the Colonial Choseon youth earn money and succeed in the field of business, based on the contents of appendix. In short, this study is meaningful in that it is the first attempt to examine the distribution of Marden’s successism in Korean society.
