A study on “Gyeok‐manpil(桂屋漫筆)” Serialized in Chosun‐ilbo

본 논문은 『조선일보』 1920년 12월 10일부터 1921년 4월 20일까지 연재된 「계옥만필」에 대한 연구이다. 「계옥만필」은 고전 문집, 설화집 등에서 이야기를 발췌하고 때때로 그에 대한 소감이나 강평을 더한 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 「계옥만필」의 전거(典據)는 다양한데, 그중 『기문총화(記聞叢話)』와 『용재총화(慵齋叢話)』를 많이 활용하였다. 「계옥만필」의 저자로 표시된 ‘계하산인(桂下散人)’은 ‘홍종한(洪鍾翰)’이다. 홍종한은 대한제국과 조선총독부 시기 관료였으며, 조선총독부 주관으로 쓰여진 「고종실록」과 「순종실록」의 편찬위원으로 참여한 인물이다. 이 홍종한은 「계옥만필」 외에도 『조선일보』 창간 초기 다수의 글을 신문 1면에 발표하며 중요한 필진으로 활약하였다. 「계옥만필」은 ‘교훈’과 ‘재미’ 모두 추구하면서 게재를 시작하는데, 이는 『조선일보』의 문예 전략과 일정 부분 상통한다. 이 글은 초반에는 여성 독자를 의식한 교훈적인 글로 시작하지만 이후 기이하고 우스운 이야기, 역사적 이야기 등을 주로 게시한다. 이는 문체에 따른 독자에 대한 인식 변화가 있었음을 의미한다.

This is a study on “Gyeok-manpil(桂屋漫筆)” serialized in Chosun-ilbo from December 10, 1920 to April 20, 1921. “Gyeok-manpil” is composed of excerpts from classic literary works and tales, and sometimes with additional comments and criticisms about them. References(典據) of “Gyeok-manpil” are diverse, and among them, Gimunc-honghwa(記聞叢話) and Yongjae-chonghwa(慵齋叢話) were used a lot. ‘Gyeha-sanin(桂下散人)’ marked as the author of “Gyeok-manpil” is ‘Hong Jong‐han(洪鍾翰)’. Hong Jong‐han was a government official during the periods of the Korea Empire and Japanese Government General of Joseon, and he was a member of the editorial board of the “Veritable Records of King Gojong” and the “Veritable Records of King Sunjong,” both written by the Japanese Government General of Joseon. In addition to “Gyeok-manpil”, Hong Jong‐han published a number of articles on the front page of the newspaper in the early days of Chosun‐ilbo and played an active role as an important editorial staff. Whilst “Gyeok-manpil” started publishing while pursuing both 'lessons' and 'fun', it is consistent with the literary strategy of Chosun-ilbo to some extent. This work began as a didactic article conscious of female readers at the beginning, but after afterward, it mainly posted bizarre and funny stories and historical stories. This means that there was a change in the perception of readers according to the literary style.
