슈타인은 왜 그 당시 시대와 ‘불화’할 수밖에 없었는가. 슈타인과 그녀가 활동했던 그 당시 시대적 상황은 결코 함께 공존할 수 없었는가. 슈타인과 그 시대 사이에서 ‘불화’의 형태는 슈타인과 그 당시 시대적 상황 사이에 근본적 ‘차이’와 ‘다름’으로 드러나고 있다는 사실이 핵심쟁점이다. 슈타인이 그 당시 시대적 상황과 여성문제를 다름으로, 종교문제를 차이로 언급하 면서 당당하게 자신의 사상을 드러냈던 부분을 밝혀내는데 본 글의 목표를 두었다. 그 결과 첫째, 남성과 여성이라는 이분법적 구도에 고착화시키지 않고, 인간이라는 공통된 범주에서 여성과 남성의 지위를 동등하게 규정해 냈다 는 점에서 슈타인이 그 시대적 상황과 ‘다름’으로서 여성문제를 규정했다는 점이다. 둘째, 슈타인에 의하면, 사제와 수도자들은 특별하게 임명되어져야 한다, 즉 특별한 신의 부름을 통해서 그들이 초빙되어야 한다는 것이다. 그렇다면 신의 부름을 통해서 그들이 초빙될 때, 남성과 여성의 구별이 있다 는 것인가? 이것은 사제와 수도자들이 신의 부름을 통해 특별히 임명되기 때문에 남성과 여성의 차별을 두지 말아야 한다는 의미이다. 사제 임명에 대한 슈타인의 입장은 그 당시 남성이 사제가 되어야 한다는 일반적 견해에 반대하는 입장이다. 수도회의 입장이나 상황을 위해 언제든지 여성은 남성과 똑같이 임명 되어야 함을 강조한다. 그리고 오늘날의 수도 생활이 다양하게 분파되고 있는 상황을 생각해본다면 더욱 더 그렇다. 슈타인은 사회적 그리고 교회적영역 안에서 여성문제에 관하여 그 당시 보다 발전적이며 진 보적 태도를 갖고 있었다. 슈타인의 교회에 관한 진보적 입장은 여성 활동 에서 새로운 돌파구를 마련하면서, 남성들이 견지하던 그들의 자명한 권위 의식에 대한 공격적 도전이라 할 수 있었다.
Why was Stein compelled to be in ‘discord’ with the times? Could not Stein and the situation of the times when she was active ever coexist? The key issue is the fact that the form of ‘discord’ between Stein and her times is revealed as fundamental ‘disparity’ and ‘difference’ between Stein and the situation of the times. Therefore, this study aims to find out how Stein boldly revealed her thoughts by referring to women's issues as difference and religious issues as disparity from the situation of the times. As a result, it has been found that, first, Stein defined the women’s issues as ‘difference’ from the situation of the times in that they were not fixed on the dichotomy of men and women, but defined the positions of women and men equally in the common category of human beings. Second, according to Stein, priests and religious people should be specially appointed, that is, they should be invited through a special divine call. If so, is there a distinction between men and women when they are invited through a divine call? This means that there should be no discrimination between men and women because priests and religious people are specially appointed through a divine call. Stein's position on the appointment of a priest contradicts the general view at that time that only men should be priests. She emphasizes that at any time for the position or situation of the Order, women should be appointed the same as men. And even more so if we consider the situation in which today's religious life is so much diversified. In our time, many roles may be played by women's congregations, priests and denominations. Stein had a more expansive and progressive attitude at that time regarding women's issues in the social and ecclesial spheres. While making a new breakthrough in women's activities, Stein's progressive stance on the church was an aggressive challenge to the self-evident sense of authority that men held.
