본고는 조선 후기에 유통된 전기소설 국문본을 종합적으로 고찰한 것이다. 그 대상은 중국 전기소설집인 『태평광기』와 전등류(剪燈類) 소설의 국문본, 그리고 한국 전기소설인 <주생전>･<위생전>･<운영전>･<최척전>･<왕경룡전>･<동선기>의 국문본이다. 전기소설의 국문본은 크게 번역본과 개작본으로 구분할 수 있는데, 번역본은 다시 원전인 한문본에 가까운 경우와 어느 정도의 변개가 이루어진 경우로 나눌 수 있고, 개작본 역시 원작의 영향이 남아 있는 경우와 원작과 거의 무관할 정도로 바뀐 경우로 구분할 수 있다. 전기소설의 국문본은 대개 ‘한문본 → 국문 번역본 → 국문 개작본’의 과정을 거쳤을 것으로 생각된다. 직역에 가까운 국문본은 애초에 상층의 여성 독자들을 위해 번역되었던 것들인데, 이것이 전사의 과정을 거듭하면서 하층의 독자들에게까지 전파되었을 것이다. 그리고 그 과정에서 국문 통속소설 독자의 기호에 부합하지 않는 부분들에 변개가 일어나고, 마침내 개작본이 산출되었을 것으로 본다. 아울러 소설의 상업적 출판 역시 전기소설 국문본의 개작에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 본래 전기소설은 다양한 층위에서의 독해가 가능한 양식이다. 그런데 한문으로 쓰인 전기소설이 국문으로 번역되자, 전기소설 국문본은 ‘기이한 이야기’로만 읽힐 뿐 다른 층위의 독해는 거의 불가능해졌다. 이것이 전기소설 국문본의 변개와 개작이 이루어진 원인이라 할 수 있다.
This study is a comprehensive review of the Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels circulated in the late Joseon period. The subjects include the Chinese jeon-gi novel Taepyeonggwanggi, the Korean language versions of the Jeondeungsinhwa type (剪燈類) novels, and the Korean language versions of the Korean jeon-gi novels Jusaengjeon, Wisaengjeon, Unyeongjeon, Choicheokjeon, Wanggyeongnyongjeon, and Dongseon-gi. The Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels can largely be classified into translations or adaptions. Translations can be classified into those which are close to the original Chinese texts, and those which have been somewhat modified. The adaptions can be classified into those where the influence of the original work remains, and those which have been modified to the point of being almost irrelevant to the original works. The Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels are largely deemed to have undergone the process of “Chinese version → Korean translation version → Korean adaption.” The Korean versions, which were close to literal translations, were originally translated for female readers in the upper class, which would have spread to readers in the lower class through repeated transcription processes. In this process, there were modifications in parts that did not satisfy the tastes of the readers of popular Korean novels, ultimately resulting in the adaptions. The commercial publication of the novels also significantly affected the adaption of the Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels. In essence, the style of jeon-gi novels is readable across various levels. However, when the jeon-gi novels written in Chinese were translated into Korean, the Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels were read only as "bizarre stories" and became almost impossible to read at any other level. This may be deemed the reason for the modification and adaption of the Korean language versions of jeon-gi novels.
