세계를 분석하는 방식을 선험적인 프레임에 온전히 가두지 않으면서, 동시에 우리 시대 거대한 불평등과 모순들을 집요하게 탐색해온 비판인류학의 흐름을 이어가려면 어떤 접근이 필요한가? 본 연구는 행위자-네트워크-이론(Action-Network-Theory, ANT)이 사회를‘영역’이 아닌 ‘연결’과 ‘생성’으로 접근하는 방식에 주목하면서, ANT 와 비판인류학 사이의 상호참조적인 대화를 도모하려는 목적을 갖는다. 나의 중국 선전 폭스콘 공장지대에서의 현장연구를 사례로 활용하면서, ANT가 사회를 탐색해온 방식을 (1) 인간-비인간의 이종적 네트워크로서의 사회, (2) ‘행위자-네트워크’로서의 행위자, (3) ‘평평한’ 배치와 중심-주변의 대칭성을 중심으로 살피고, 이러한 접근이 기존의 비판인류학 연구와 어떻게 수렴하고 분기하는지 검토한다. ‘구조’라는 모호한 배후를 등장시키는 대신 느리고 세심하게 연결을 좇는 ANT의 방법은, 기존의 비판적 연구나 저항적 실천이 병목에 다다른 것처럼 보일 때 중요한 제언이 될 수 있다. 하지만 ANT가 추구하는 ‘가능성의 정치’를 성실하게 추구하려면 학계 안팎에서 좀 더 급진적인 방법론적, 제도적 실험과 쇄신이 요구된다.
How is it possible to push further the efforts of critical anthropology to engage in huge inequality and increasing conflicts in our time, without subjecting our analysis of contemporary world to an a priori framework? This study aims at inter-referential dialogues between action-networktheory (ANT) and critical anthropology while shedding light on how ANT approaches the social not as a specific domain but in terms of connections and associations. Using my fieldwork in a Foxconn town in Shenzhen as an ethnographic instance, I review the ANT’s emphasis on (a) heterogeneous networks embodying human and non-human actors, (b) actors as “actor-network,” and (c) the flattening of the social as well as the symmetrical relationship between centers and peripheries. Particular attention is given to how the ANT’s approach on the social is converged or in conflict with that of critical anthropology. I argue that the ANT’s proposal to trace connections slowly and carefully, instead of sticking to the obscure rhetoric of “structure,” is worthy of attention when the political of critical anthropology seems to reach a deadlock. However, I suggest that the ANT’s “politics of possibility,” which is not given but unfolded through new connections, calls for experimental and institutional transformations in and outside academia.
