이 글은 인간의 마음이 인간의 두뇌와 피부를 넘어 외부세계로 확장될 수 있다는 ‘확장된 마음에 관한 가설’을 배경으로 마음의 음악적 확장에 대해 논구한다. 보다 구체적으로 이 글은 마음의 정감적 영역이 음악적으로 확장된다는 것이 과연 무엇이며 이것이 어떻게 가능한지, 그리고 마음의 정감적 영역은 어떤 다양한 방식들을 통해 음악적으로 확장될 수 있는지를 이에 대해 최근 제기된 논의들을 중심으로 살펴본다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 먼저 확장된 마음에 관한 가설을 도입하여 마음이 확장된다는 것이 뜻하는 바로서 최근 일반적으로 합의되고 있는 바가 무엇인지를 제시하고, 확장된 마음의 이러한 특성이 정감의 영역에서 과연 어떻게 드러나는 지 제시한다. 그러고 나서 정감적 마음이 음악을 통해 확장될 수 있음을 주장하는 기존의 논의들에서 정감적 마음의 음악적 확장이 어떻게 제안되고 있는지 면밀히 검토한 후 기존의 논의들에서 대체로 간과되고 있는, 정감적 마음의 음악적 확장이 갖는 사회문화적이며 제도적인 면모를 조명한다.
This essay discusses musically extended mind against the hypothesis of the extended mind which claims that human mind extends over to the external world beyond human brain and skin. More specifically, this essay investigates what it means that affective mind extends and how it is possible and examines the various ways in which the extension of affective mind is achieved. For this purpose, the hypothesis of the extended mind is first introduced and what this hypothesis is currently understood to mean is shown. Then, it is suggested how the nature of the extended mind emerge in the area of human affectivity, and it is closely reviewed how the extension of affective mind through music has been suggested in the current discussions of extended affectivity. Finally, it is argued that the socio-cultural and institutional aspects of the musically extended affectivity which have been generally overlooked in those discussions should be taken into account as a core dimension of the affectively extended mind through music.
