본 논문은 극영화에서 인공지능이 인간사회를 지탱하는 문화적 각본을 수행하는 방식으로 표상된다고 주장한다. 인공지능에 대한 일반논의는 인공지능을 인간과 동등한 생명체로 간주하거나 인간에게 완전히 의존적인 기계로 파악하는 양자택일의 관점으로 갈라져 있다. 최근의 발전수준은 인공지능이 명백히 인간수준의 인지능력을 성취할 뿐만 아니라 그것을 능가할 것으로 예측한다. 그러나 본 연구는 인공지능이 인간과 동등한 인지능력을 갖춘다 할지라도 인간사회가 공유하는 사회적 준칙, 가치관, 예법, 공손한 말투 등 수행함으로써 그 인간성을 입증할 수밖에 없다고 판단한다. 본 연구는 AI가 인간성의 수행을 위해 따를 수밖에 없는 행동방식을 문화적 각본(cultural script)으로 지칭한다. 문화적 각본은 개별 사회가 보유한 규범, 가치, 행동방식의 수행적 서사들이다. 문화적 각본은 공공의 가치와 우선순위를 반영하며 개인의 바람직한 행동양식을 규정하는 지표가 된다. 본 연구는 인공지능과 문화적 각본의 상관관계를 입증하기 위해 세 편의 극영화 <엑스 마키나>(Ex Machina, 2015), <나의 마더>(I Am Mother, 2018), <익스팅션: 종의 구원자>(Extinction, 2018)가 묘사하는 안드로이드의 의미화 방식을 분석한다. 이들 작품에서 안드로이드 주인공들은 각각 여성성, 모성, 재난에 맞선 남성 가장이라는 문화적 각본을 재연한다. 이들 문화적 각본은 서구문화에서 비롯되었지만, 서구 근대성을 이식한 비서구 문화권에서도 일반적으로 통용되는 가치체계이자 행위의 양식들이다. 해당 영화들은 안드로이드의 관점을 빌어 보편화한 문화적 각본들의 모순과 결절을 드러낸다. 관객은 AI의 언행을 통해 자신이 내면화한 문화적 각본의 외연을 바라본다. 그리하여 AI의 인간됨이 무엇이며 그것의 준거점인 인간성이 무엇인지를 자문하게 된다.
This study observes that artificial intelligence (AI) expresses its humanity by performing cultural scripts established within human communities. The general view takes AI either as a life form equal to man or as a machine dependent on man’s operation. Recent developments of AI predict AI will not just achieve the level of human intelligence but exceed it. However, this study suggests that artificial intelligence is designed to act out the value systems and behavioral manners, including a polite way of speaking to interact with man. This study calls the modes of behavior cultural scripts. The cultural scripts dictate how to act and speak to be accepted as a legitimate member of the community. The cultural scripts reflect the priorities in the society’s value system. This study examines three feature films-Ex Machina (2015), I Am Mother (2018), and Extinction (2018)- to discuss the relations between AI and cultural scripts. The android protagonists of these films perform the cultural scripts related to femininity, maternity, and the fatherhood in the face of life-threatening disaster. The cultural scripts originated in Western societies but have also settled in non-Western societies as the universal norms and modes of behavior. This study points out that the AI characters perform the cultural scripts, laying bare the contradictions and dilemmas underlying the cultural scripts. That way, the androids enable the audiences to look askance at their internalized cultural scripts. The AI movies challenge our fixed notions on what humans are.
