본고는 아동과 청소년 독자들에게 엄청난 인기를 누리고 있지만, 학술적 연구가 다소 미비한 R.L. 스타인의 『구스범스』시리즈(Goosebumps)를 중심으로 스토리텔링 전략으로서의 공포와 유머를 살펴보도록 한다. 아동문학에서 “공포”라는 요소는 많은 논란과 논쟁을 낳고 있는 토픽 중의 하나이다. 아동문학이라는 특수한 조건하에서 대상독자인 아동들의 도서 선택권은 부모나 선생님으로 대표되는 어른들의 결정에 달려 있고, 덧붙여 과거보다는 다소 변화된 면이 있기는 하지만 여전히 어린이에 대한 교육과 훈육의 관점이 아동문학의 중심적 개념으로 남아 있다. 이러한 점에서 이야기의 요소에 대상독자인 아동에게 악영향을 미칠 수 있다고 판단되는 “공포”적 요소는 지양되어야 할 것으로 여겨지고 있는 실정이다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 이러한 기존의 사고에 대한 다소간의 반론을 제기하며, 오히려 이러한 공포스러운 요소를 희극적인 상황으로 변모시켜 오히려 아동들의 정신적, 심리적 성숙에 도움을 줄 수 있는 요인이 될 수 있다는 점을 부각하고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적은 아동문학 작품에 나타난 “공포”라는 이야기 요소를 “유머”라는 요소로 변모시켜 대상독자인 아동들이 실제 삶에서 겪을 수 있는 트라우마적인 상황을 어떻게 효과적으로 극복할 수 있게 되는지를 보여주고자 한다. 먼저 아동문학에서 공포의 담론이 어떤 방식으로 사용되어 왔는지를 살펴보기 위해 전래동화를 표본으로 하여 설명하고자 한다. 전래동화에서 등장하는 공포의 요소는 대상독자인 아동들에게 일련의 장면을 제시하고, 이를 활용하여 강압적인 방식으로 아동에 대한 교육과 훈육의 담론을 작동시키고 있다. 이를 분석한 후 『구스범스』시리즈를 중심으로 전통적인 아동문학에서의 공포의 요소가 어떤 방식으로 희극적으로 전복되는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 『구스범스』시리즈의 서사적 특징을 중심으로 이러한 공포적 요소가 유머러스하게 변모하는 과정을 추적하도록 한다. 마지막으로 이러한 변모가 아동 독자들에게 어떤 방식으로 교육적 효과를 드러내는지 정리해 보도록 한다.

This study is to investigate the discourse of fear in children’s literature and to find out how much influence it can have on child readers. In order to examine how the discourse of fear is activated, it must be the first step to analyze the overall characteristics of fairy tales. Based on this, Goosebumps series will be discussed in comparison to fairy tales. Most fairy tales, especially warning fairy tales, tend to include lots of fearful scenes with the principles such as prohibition and punishment. It has a specific intention for child readers, which is that children should be trained and educated by offering them fear. When it comes to fear in children’s literature, it is believed that it must be effective to control their behavior in a negative way. However, Goosebumps series, composed by R. L. Stein, are likely to modify the discourse of fear in children’s literature that has existed for a long time. To be specific, the general narrative and structural characteristics of Goosebumps series are designed to change the role of fear in children’s literature into a new one, which is humor. Goosebumps series enable child readers to overcome undesirable feelings such as fear and anxiety by changing fear into humor. Consequently, the ultimate goal of this study is to figure out how much positive effect it has on child readers if they can change fear into humor from these series.
