이 글은 만해 한용운의 한시를 번역한 서정주의 주석에 대한 최초의 연구이다. 서정주는 만해 한시의 많은 번역자들 중에서 자신의 모든 번역시에 주석을 붙인 유일한 번역자이다. 따라서 그의 주석은 한용운 한시에 대한 해설이자 비평이며 인간 한용운에 대한 깊은 이해를 탐구하는 작가론이기도 하다. 그는 이 주석 작업을 통해서 시인으로서의 동일시 체험을 다양하게 보여주며, 한용운 한시를 미당 식 한글시로 바꾸는 일에 특별한 노력을 선보였다. 주석은 그 특별한 노력의 일환이기도 하다. 서정주의 주석은 인간 한용운에 대한 깊은 이해의 추구, 만해 시의 격조에 대한 상찬, 창의적 의역에 대한 해설의 측면에서 주목할 만하다. 인간 한용운에 대한 이해의 추구는 다시 ‘만해의 마음 속속들이 알 만하다’, ‘대인 기질과 시인 감수성을 읽다’, ‘스님들의 계보와 교유를 헤아리다.’ 등으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 만해 시의 격조에 대한 상찬은 ‘구성과 배치를 주목하다’, ‘문학의 힘으로 현실을 견디다’, ‘창의적 표현, 기러기가 혓바닥 힘으로 길을 내다.’ 등으로 구성했다. 창의적 의역에 대한 해설은 ‘의역의 풍부한 맥락을 열다’, ‘제목과 내용을 조화시키다’, ‘간절함을 구체적으로 실감하다’ 등으로 나누어 살폈다. 이를 통해 서정주는 한용운 한시에 대한 풍부한 맥락과 해설을 제공하고 있다.
This article is the first study on the commentary of Seo Jeong-ju, who translated Manhae’s Chinese poetry. Seo Jeong-ju is the only translator who commented on all of his translations among the many translators of Manhae's Chinese poetry. Therefore, his commentary is a explanation and criticism of Manhae's Chinese poetry, and also a writer's theory that explores a deeper understanding of human Han Yong-un. Through this commentary work, he showed various experiences of identification as a poet, and showed special efforts in translating Manhae's Chinese poetry into Midang-style Hangul poetry. Seo Jeong-ju's commentary on Manhae's Chinese poetry is also part of that special effort. Seo Jeong-ju's commentary on Manhae's Chinese poetry is remarkable in terms of pursuing a deeper understanding of human Han Yong-un, complimenting the tone of Manhae’s poetry, and explaining on creative liberal translation. The pursuing a deeper understanding of human Han Yong-un was again divided into ‘it is worth knowing the depths of Manhae's heart’, ‘Reading the temperament of a great man and the poet's sensitivity’, ‘Finding out the genealogy of monks and their relationship with monks’. The complimenting the tone of Manhae's poetry consisted of ‘Paying attention to composition and arrangement’, ‘Enduring reality through the power of literature’, ‘Creative expression, and geese make the way with the power of tongue’. The explaining on creative liberal translation was divided into ‘Opening the rich context of the liberal translation’, ‘Reconciling the title and content’, ‘Feeling the earnestness in concretely’. Through this, Seo Jeong-ju provides rich context and explain on Manhae's poetry.
