이 연구는 박완서의 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』에서, 외면과 가시화의 공간적 실천이 서울의 도시공간을 배경으로 전개되는 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 지금까지 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』는 전후 자본주의 성장 과정에서, 경제력을 획득한 수지와 수철 남매가 그렇지 못한 오목을 외면하는 이야기로 이해되었다. 그리하여 자본가 계급의 도덕적 결함 및 위선을 드러내는 서사로 이해되었다. 그러나 이 연구는 오목을 수동적인 외면의 대상이 아니라, 역동적인 이동성의 주체로 재정의했다. 즉 자본가 계급이 생산한 ‘차이의 공간’ 때문에 고통받고 있지만, 계속해서 정해진 위치를 벗어나 이동성을 발휘하는 주체인 것으로 파악했다. 이는 자본가 계급에 의해 만들어진 외면의 조건들을, 거꾸로 ‘가시화’의 조건으로 전유하는 공간적 실천이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 과정은 소설의 공간성을 정리하며 이루어졌다. 즉 서사공간의 수평․수직적 차원을 매핑함으로써, 등장인물들의 위치와 상호작용의 양상을 시각화했다. 그리하여 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』가 서울 도시화의 불균등한 공간의 생산을 포착하면서, 한편으로는 그러한 억압적 환경을 치열한 투쟁과 실천의 조건으로 전환하는 서사라는 점을 드러냈다.
This study examines how the spatial practice of ‘look away’ and visualization unfolds in Park Wan-Suh’s Winter was Warm that Year. Until now, this novel has been understood as a story in which Su-Ji and Su-Cheol, who acquired economic power during the post-war capitalist growth process, turned away from poor Oh-Mok. Thus, it was understood as a narrative that reveals the immorality and hypocrisy of the capitalist class. However, this study redefined Oh-Mok as a subject of dynamic mobility, not as a passive object. Furthermore, Oh-Mok was recognized as a subject trying to exert mobility outside of a ‘determined location’, rather than simply suffering from it. This process was performed by creating maps of the novel. That is, by mapping the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the narrative space, the positions of the characters and the aspect of interaction were visualized. Thus, it was revealed that Winter was Warm That Year is a narrative that captures the production of uneven spaces of urbanization in Seoul, while turning such a repressive environment into a condition for fierce struggle and practice.
