The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mediating effect of goal setting level in the relationship between success-failure attribution and perceived task cost for middle and high school student in mathematics. The findings are as follows. First, it showed that success-failure attribution predicts goal setting level and task cost, and goal setting level predicts task cost. The mediating effect of the goal setting level was significant in the relationship between success-failure attribution (success-ability⋅success-effort⋅failure-effort) and task cost (effort⋅opportunity⋅emotional cost) except for ego-cost. Second, gender difference was found in the path from success-failure attribution (success-effort) to task cost (emotional cost), from goal setting level to task cost (ego cost). In both paths, only the female group was positively significant. This study is meaningful that it provided the underlying data for subsequent studies related to task cost.
