이 논문은 인공지능 기술이 발전함에 따라 인간의 정체성 혼란과 소외가 심화되는 현상을 바라보면서, 이 문제의 해결을 위한 출구를 모색해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 우리는 인공지능이 인간과 같은 존재일 수 있다는 생각에 대해 재고해볼 필요가 있다. 많은 과학자들은 자율적으로 사고하는 인공지능의 개발에 대해 낙관적으로 전망하지만, 필자는 인공지능이 마음, 의식, 자아를 지닌 존재가 아니며, 기술이 아무리 발전하더라도 그런 인공지능을 만들어내기는 어렵다고 본다. 이런 문제의식을 바탕으로 이 논문은 인간과 인공지능이 분명 ‘다른’ 존재임을 인식하는 것이 인간의 정체성을 확인하고 기술 발전에 따른 소외 문제를 극복하는 데 필요한 일이라고 제안하고자 한다. 필자는 ‘스스로 생각하는 기계’라는 발상이 물활론적이고 애니미즘적인 시각을 담고 있으며, 이러한 경향은 현대 과학기술의 ‘신화화’에 기여하고 있음을 논할 것이다. 과학기술은 인간에게 신성을 부여하고 초인간을 탄생시킬 길을 열어줌으로써 새로운 신화를 써나가기 시작했다. 이런 상황에서 과학기술에 대한 무조건적인 신뢰는 그것에 대한 종교적인 숭배로까지 이어질 수 있다. 또한 이성이 도구화되는 경향에 따라, 뛰어난 계산 능력을 자랑하는 인공지능은 인간보다 우월한 존재로서 인정받게 된다. 그에 따라 인간과 인공지능의 지위, 사용자와 수단의 관계는 도치된다. 다른 한편으로, 감정 없는 인공지능을 통해 교류와 소통의 문제를 해결하려는 시도는 인간의 소외를 더욱 심화시킨다. 이러한 문제들을 극복하기 위해서 인공지능과의 차이점을 주목함으로써 인간의 고유성을 다시 확인하고 인간다움의 가치에 더욱 집중할 필요성이 제기된다.
This article aims to seek a solution to the confusion over human identity and the issue of human alienation, which have been intensified by the development of artificial intelligence technology. In order to achieve this, we need to reconsider the idea that artificial intelligence can behave like a human being. While scientists are optimistic about the development of autonomously thinking artificial intelligence, this paper argues that artificial intelligence cannot have a mind, a consciousness, or a self, and such artificial intelligence cannot be created regardless of advances in technology. Thus, it appears necessary to recognize the fundamental difference between human beings and artificial intelligence. This could help us retrieve human identity and overcome the issue of alienation resulting from technological advances. The idea of a machine that thinks for itself entails a hylozoistic, animistic, and materialistic view, which leads to the mythification of contemporary science and technology. Science and technology have created new myths by giving divinity to humans who thus expelled God and by leading them to create a superhuman. Unconditional trust in science and technology results in such phenomenon as technical religion. Instrumental reason, exalted as computational ability, has reversed the relationship between humans and devices as means. As a result, artificial intelligence designed for human convenience is recognized as more important than human beings themselves, who have become assistants for the work of artificial intelligence. In addition to this, attempts to communicate with artificial intelligence that has no emotion deepen the human alienation. In order to overcome these issues, it is necessary to reaffirm human identity by recognizing the difference between humans and artificial intelligence and to bring the value of humanity into sharp focus.
