이 연구는 오페라 「손탁호텔」을 중심으로 현재 한국오페라가 견지하는 방향성에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 2005년 초연된 이 작품은 동시대 한국오페라의 지향점과 특색을 뚜렷하게 내포하고 있다고 파악된다. 2000년대 초반 한국오페라는 양적 팽창과 대형화가 거듭돼 질적으로는 하락하는 양상이 나타났다. 이 무렵 시작된 ‘소극장오페라축제’는 ‘한국오페라의 대중화와 저변 확대’라는 21세기 한국오페라를 위한 발전적 패러다임을 제시했다. 「손탁호텔」은 이와 같은 한국오페라의 새로운 창작 지향에 부합한 작품이라고 볼 수 있다. 공연의 배경과 의의를 분석하기 위한 현상학적 접근과 함께 관련 면담조사 수행 등 실제적 연구도 병행하고자 했다. 이를 토대로 작품을 소재, 구성, 음악 세 가지 측면으로 분석했다. 그 결과, 이 작품의 특징은 소재의 참신성, 접근이 용이한 구성양식, 대중의 기호와 예술성이 적절히 조화를 이루는 음악으로 나타났다. 기존과는 다른 「손탁호텔」의 이 같은 특색은 이후, 한국오페라의 새로운 방향이 된 다양성의 추구라는 측면에서 의미가 있다고 볼 수 있다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the direction of operas currently created in Korea. The opera Sontag Hotel, is believed to have a distinctive orientation and characteristics in Korean operas, so in addition to phenomenological research, practical researches such as related interviews were conducted. Based on this researches, the opera was analyzed in three aspects: material, composition, and music. In the early 2000s, the quality of the Korean Opera declined continuously due to repeated quantitative expansion and enlargement. The Small Theater Opera Festival, which began around this time, presented “popularization and expansion of the base” as the paradigm of Korean opera in the 21st century. The Sontag Hotel is considered to be a work that fits the new creative intention of the Korean opera. The characteristics of this indoor opera, distinguished by novelty of material, easy-to-access composition, and the music that adequately harmonizes popular tastes and artistry, are alternatives to the Korean opera and can be seen as a direction that reflects the spirit of the era that pursues diversity.
