한강의 채식주의자는 2016년 맨부커상을 수상하며 국내외 현대 문학계에서 중요한 위치를 차지하였다. 수상 이후 해당 작품의 영문 번역본에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되었지만, 원작을 관통하는 에코페미니즘적인 주제 의식이 번역문에서 어떻게 구현되었는지 분석하는 젠더 관점의 연구는 거의 진행되지 않았다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 여성 등장인물 구현에 대한 분석을 기반으로 원작의 에코페미니즘 관점이 영역본에서 어떻게 구현되었는지 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 번역문에서 나타난 다양한 번역 변이는 가부장제 사회에서 저항하는 여성의 저항의지가 약화되어 표현되거나, 인물 구현에 일관성이 저해되는 결과를 초래하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 젠더 관점에서 채식주의자 영역본을 분석한 연구로 향후 젠더번역 연구에 관심을 촉발할 것으로 기대된다.
The Vegetarian written by Korean writer Han Kang won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016, occupying a noticeable position in contemporary Korean literature and at the same time in the international literary world. Despite a number of studies examining the characteristics of its translation, little attention has been paid to gender translation on how the author’s eco-feminist perspective that penetrates the entire body of work was embodied in its English rendition. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to explore how the eco-feminist perspective in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian is represented in its translation, based on the analysis of female characterization. Findings have revealed that various shifts in the translated text have affected the embodiment of the feminist ideas of the original text, mainly contributing to the weakening of women’s will to resist to patriarchal values and causing an inconsistency in characterization. Since this study analyzes The Vegetarian from a gender perspective, and it is expected to spark interest in gender translation studies in the future.
