본 논문은 모든 인간들이 보편적으로 공유하는 집단무의식인 원형(原型, Archetypes)은 시대와 문화 등을 초월하는 보편성을 갖는 점에 착안하여 타로(Tarot) 마이너 아르카나(Minor Arcana)의 상징 의미와 동아시아의 보편적 인식체계인 음양오행(陰陽五行)과의 상관성에 관해 관련 문헌들의 분석으로 고찰한 것이다. ‘모든 물질은 물(water), 공기(air), 불(fire), 흙(earth)의 4가지 원소로 이루어져 있다’는 서양의 4원소설은 동아시아의 음양오행설과 매우 유사하다. 마이너 아르카나 4가지 수트에서 지팡이는 불(火) 원소와 양성(+), 컵은 물(水) 원소와 음성(–), 검은 공기(木) 원소와 양성(+), 오각형은 땅(土) 원소와 음성(–) 기질을 상징한다. 이렇게 마이너 아르카나의 각 수트는 금(金)을 제외한 오행과 음양에 각각 배속되면서 일정한 상관성을 갖는다. 본 연구를 통해 점술용으로만 현재 인식되고 있는 타로에 대한 이해가 보다 확장되기를 희망한다.
This thesis studied through the analysis of related literatures, the correlationship between symbolic meanings of Tarot Minor Arcana and Yin-Yang and Five Elements (陰陽五行), the universal recognition system of East Asia by having views on the point that archetypes (原型), the collective unconscious universally shared by all men, has universality to transcend time and culture. The Western theory of Five elements that all matter is composed of Five elements of water, air, fire, and earth is very imilar to the Taoistic Yin-Yang and Five Elements Theory of East Asia. In the four suits of Minor Arcana, wands symbolize fire (火) and positive (+) disposition, cups do water (水) and negative (–) disposition, swords do black air (木) and positive (+) disposition, and pentacles do earth (土) and negative (–) disposition. Like this, each suit of Minor Arcana is constantly interrelated with Yin-Yang and Elements except gold (金) as it is attached to them. The researcher hopes that understanding of Tarot which is now recognized as fortune telling will be expanded through this study.
