이 글은 1980년 5･18항쟁 이후 5월운동 과정에서 전개되었던 애도와 순례(巡禮)를 5월 공감장(共感場)과 감성적 주체의 형성 과정이자 그 출현을 실증하는 것으로 바라보고, 그 구체적 양상을 추적했다. ‘기억의 정치’ 속에서 항쟁의 진실과 참상을 실증하는 망월묘역을 향한 순례행렬은 권력이 강제한 집단기억과는 다른 대항기억을 새긴 새로운 감성적 주체들의 저항적 실천이었고, 그들의 실천 속에서 망월묘역은 ‘폭도들의 묘지’에서 ‘민주 성지’로 재편되었다. 동시에 망월묘역의 장소성은 그것을 매개로 한 광범위한 순례공감장을 형성하고 5월운동을 촉진했다. 하지만 망월묘역에 뿌리를 둔 순례공감장이 균질하고 정적인 것은 아니었다. 그것은 한국사회의 5･18항쟁을 매개로 한 정치적 역학관계 및 담론지형을 배경으로, 민주주의를 내기물로 상정했던 ‘공범’ 세력 간 상호 대립과 충돌이 지속된 유동적인 공간이었다. 결국 5･18항쟁이 국가기념일로 지정되면서 망월묘역은 ‘구묘역’과 ‘국립5･18민주묘지’로 분리되었고, 오늘날 두 개의 묘역은 5월에 대한 서로 다른 기억의 뿌리이자 출발점이 되고 있다. 기념의 국가화가 낳은 문제를 성찰하는 데 있어 순례공감장이 만든 망월묘역의 장소성과 5월의 기억은 지금 여기 무엇을 말하고 기억할 것인가를 시사한다.
This paper regards the mourning and pilgrimage that took place during the May Movement after the May 18 People's Uprising in 1980 as a demonstration of the formation of a sympathetic field and emotional agent, as well as the emergence of it. It traced the specific aspect of it. The pilgrimage procession toward Mangwol Grave Yard, which demonstrates the truth and tragedy of the struggle in the “politics of memory,” was a resistive practice of new emotional subjects who engraved a counter memory different from the collective memory forced by the power. In their practice, the Mangwol Grave Yard was reorganized from the “Mobs' Cemetery” to the “Democratic Holy Land”. At the same time, the placeness of Mangwol Grave Yard formed an extensive pilgrimage sympathy through it and promoted the May Movement. It was a fluid space in which confrontation and conflict between the “accomplices” forces who assumed democracy as a stake against the backdrop of the political dynamics and discourse terrain through the May 18 Uprising in Korean society continued. Eventually, as the May 18 Uprising was designated as a national anniversary, Mangwol Grave Yard was divided into 'Old Grave Yard' and 'National 5.18 Democratic Cemetery', and today the two cemeteries are the roots and starting points of different memories of May. In reflecting on the problems created by the nationalization of the commemoration, the placeness of Mangwol Grave Yard created by Pilgrimage Sympathetic and the memory of May suggests what to say and remember here and now.
