본 연구의 목적은 신앙과 양심의 자유를 무참히 짓밟아 죽음에 이르게하는, 즉 ‘순교’가 일어나도록 하는 ‘폭력’의 문제를 인류학적 관점에서 조명하여, 세상 정권의 ‘폭력’과 ‘신자의 순교’와 ‘복음’ 간의 내적인과관계의 메커니즘을 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 우리는 폭력의 메커니즘을 이해하기 위하여 먼저 르네 지라르의 ‘모방적 욕망론’을 고찰하고, 전체주의적 폭력 메커니즘을 이해하기 위하여 독일의 나치즘, 북한의 코뮤니즘, 일본의 콜로니얼리즘 하에서 희생된 파울 슈나이더, 박봉진, 문준경을 실례로 선택하여 그들의 순교를 르네 지라르의 ‘모방적 주체-매개자-대상’의 관점에서 분석하였다. 모방적 욕망으로 이르는 종착지는 결국 권력에 의한 폭력인데, 그것이우리가 사례로 제출했던 독일의 국가사회주의가 되었든, 일제의 천황주의가 되었든, 북한의 공산주의가 되었든 그 모든 것이 전체주의를 향한 것이고, 그 밑바닥에는 지라르의 표현 방식대로 ‘신을 대적하는 사탄이 만든 거짓 신이 존재한다’라는 것이다. 결국, 순교는 이러한 폭력의 메커니즘 속에 생기는 결과라는 것이 지라르의 통찰이다. 그리스도인이 모방하는 예수 그리스도의 십자가 죽음은 전체주의적세상에 의한 그들의 폭력이 자신들의 거짓된 신격화의 산물임이었음을 드러낸 사건이었다. 그러므로 그리스도로 인한 순교는 그리스도를본받는 제자도의 최고봉이요, 전체주의가 숨기고 있던 신격화의 폭로요, 전체주의가 법의 이름으로 정당화한 모든 폭력이 불의였음을 드러낸 정의의 나타남이다.
The purpose of this study is to illuminate the problem of ‘violence’ that causes ‘martyrdom’ to happen, which causes death by trampling on freedom of faith and conscience. And it is to reveal the mechanism of relationship between ‘violence’ of the world regime, ‘martyrdom of believers’ and ‘Gospel.’ In order to understand the mechanism of violence, we first considered René Girard’s theory of ‘mimetic desire' and analyzed the martyrdom from the viewpoint of 'mimetic subject-mediator-object' of René Girard by applying Paul Schneider, Park Bong-jin and Mun Jun-kyung, who were sacrificed under Nazism, North Korean communism, and Japanese colonialism, in order to understand the mechanism of totalitarian violence. The last thing that leads to mimetic desire is violence by power. That is all about totalitarianism, whether it was the national socialism of Germany, the imperialism of Japan, or the communism of North Korea that we submitted as examples. At the bottom of it is Girard’s insight that, in Girard’s way of expressing, ‘there is a false God created by Satan who confronts God.’ In the end, martyrdom is the result of this mechanism of violence. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ imitated by Christians was an event that revealed that their violence by the totalitarian world was the product of their false deification. Therefore, martyrdom due to the confession of Christ is the highest peak of discipleship that follows Christ, the exposure of self-deification that totalitarianism was hiding, and the appearance of justice that revealed that all violence justified by totalitarianism in the name of the law was injustice.
