이 논문에서 나는 조화에 기초한 코페르니쿠스의 태양 중심 체계 옹호 논변[조화 논변]을 분석하고 평가한다. 나는 그의 조화 논변을 세 가지 논변, 즉 (i) 우주 구조의 확정에 기초한 논변 (ii) 행성 천구들의 운동과 크기 사이의 단조 관계에 기초한 논변 (iii) 다양한 천문 현상들의 상호연관성에 기초한 논변으로 분석하면서, 그의 세 번째 논변이 앞의 두 논변에 의존한다는 점을 발견했다. 또한 조화 논변에 대한 논리적, 확률적 분석을 통해 나는 태양 중심 체계의 조화가 그 체계의 참을 뒷받침하는 증거로 간주되기는 어렵지만, 이해 가능한 천문학 이론을 추구한 일부 천문학자들에게는 그 체계에 기초해 탐구할 이유를 제공할 수 있었음을 보였다.
In this paper, I analyse and evaluate Copernicus’s harmony arguments for his heliocentric system. I analyse his harmony arguments in De revolutionibus by three meanings: (i) the argument from fixed ratios of planetary spheres, (ii) the argument from monotonic relation between motions and sizes of planetary spheres, and (iii) the argument from interconnectedness of various astronomical phenomena. This analysis shows that the third argument depends on the first and the second arguments. And my logical and probabilistic evlauation on the harmony arguments shows that the harmony of the heliocentric system could not provide an evidential support for it, but could provide some astronomers who persued an intelligible astronomical theory with a reason to research on it.
