본 연구는 서양으로부터 직접 영향을 받은 과학교과서들 가운데 평양 숭실대학 설립자 윌리엄 베어드와 그의 아내 애니 베어드가 번역하고 번안한 과학교과서에 대한 기초 연구로서 근대전환기의 과학교육을 이해하고 그 변용을 추적하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 근대전환기 과학교과서 관련 선행 연구를 검토하여 격치학에서 과학으로 전환되는 과정에서 기독교계 학교 과학교과서가 갖는 특징을 제시하였다. 평양 숭실대학에서 간행된 과학교과서의 특성을 찰스 다윈의 진화론을 수용한 기독교 세계관에서 찾았으며, 당시 평양숭실대학의 교과과정과 함께 분석하였다. 본 연구는 근대전환기 과학교과서를 통해서 새로운 학문, 과학에 대한 교육의 형성에 있어서 서양인들의 영향을 추적하고 그 교과서의 성격을 분석하였다는 것에 의의가 있다. 이를 통하여 앞으로 기독교와 과학의 관계를 관련 학문들이 함께 연구하는 접근방법으로 연구할 수 있는 실마리를 제공한다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
This study is a basic study of science textbooks translated and developed by William Baird and his wife Annie Baird, founders of Pyong-yang Soongsil among science textbooks directly influenced by the West. Therefore, we reviewed prior studies related to science textbooks in encountering the modern, and presented the characteristics of Christian science textbooks in the process of transition from radical science to science. The characteristics of science textbooks published in Soongsil, Pyong-yang were found in the Christian worldview that embraced the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin, and analyzed with the curriculum of Union Christian College in Pyong-yang. This study is significant in that it traced the influence of Westerners and analyzed the nature of the textbooks in the formation of new science and education through science textbooks in the modern transition period. Through this, it can be said that it provides a clue to study the relationship between Christianity and science in the future through an interdisciplinary approach.
