2016년 브라질 리우데자네이루 올림픽을 준비하고 개최하는 일련의 과정은 신자유주의적 정치경제 논리의 지배하에 놓여 있었고, 이에 따라 신자유주의화 된 도시 공간의 창출을 촉발시켰다. 본 연구는 아카이브 연구 및 선행연구를 포함한 2차자료 분석을 바탕으로 리우데자네이루 올림픽 준비 과정에서 어떻게 도시 빈민과 도시 공간이 동시에 배제되었고 안보화 되었는지를 추적한다. 본고는 브라질의 올림픽을 위시한 메가스포츠이벤트의 개최는 도시 공간의 신자유주의적 생산을 촉진하였다는 주장을 개진하며 특히 2016년 올림픽은 신자유주의 게임, 혹은 배제의 게임으로 특징지어질 수 있다고 제시한다. 더 나아가 이러한 리우올림픽의 개최는 오히려 기존에 존재하던 브라질 내의 인종적, 사회경제적 불평등을 공고화시켰다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 향후 메가스포츠이벤트 개최와 이에 따른 신자유주의적 도시 재편과정 및 사회적 불평등에 대한 후속 연구에 기반을 제공해준다는 점에서 의미가 있다고 사료된다.
The hosting of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil and its preparation processes were closely related to a series of processes associated with the reconstitution of spectacular urban space under the political and economic rationalities of neoliberalism. Based on archival research and the analysis of documents, this study particularly explores the ways in which the urban poor and the urban space of the marginalized are simultaneously excluded and securitized in the midst of the preparation for mega-sporting event in Rio de Janeiro. this paper suggests that as Brazil’s Olympic Games have resulted in the neoliberal production of urban space and the event can be truly characterized as neoliberal games and exclusion games, which rather exacerbated social inequalities and further consolidated existing socioeconomic and racial order in Brazil. This study contributes to the basis for future research on mega-sporting events and their impact on neoliberal urban reorganization and social inequality.
