본 연구는 독일의 노년 작가 마르틴 발저가 쓴 소설 「불안의 꽃」에서에로스와 죽음을 주제로 다루고 있다. 인간은 그 누구도 자신의 죽음을직접 체험적으로 반성할 수는 없다. 우리는 다른 사람의 죽음이나 자신이 치명적으로 위기를 겪었을 때, 죽음에 대한 상상을 통해 어떤 인식에도달할 수 있을 것이다. 소설의 주인공 카를은 노인이지만 사회적으로는 성공한 펀드매니저인데, 그는 서른 살 이상이나 더 어린 여성에게 정욕적 사랑에 빠지고 예기치 않게 치명적인 죽음 앞에 서게 된다. 이러한위기 앞에 선 주인공은 욕망과 금기 사이에서 정신의 진자운동을 시작하며, 에로스와 죽음에 이르는 문제성에 대해 반성하게 된다. 발저가 노년에 보여준 이전 소설들의 주인공들이 노년의 에로스를 사회적으로 차별하고 금기하는 데에 대한 저항적 외침이었던 반면, 이 소설에서 주인공카를을 통해 발저는 처음으로 에로스와 죽음을 주제화하고 있다고 본 연구는 생각한다. 이러한 출발점에서 본 연구는 바타이유와 보드리야르의이론을 중심적 기반으로 삼아 이 소설 속에서 에로스와 타나토스의 양상이 어떻게 나타나며, 주인공의 부정적 상태를 인식하게 만드는지 연구하였으며, 더 나아가 나이 든 남자의 욕망과 몰락을 보여주는 소설 속의아이러니한 과정이 어떤 메시지를 지니고 있는가에 대해서도 접근해보았다.
This work deals with the topics of eroticism and Thanatos in Martin Walser’s novelAngstblüte. No-one is able to reflect on their own death. Humans can only imagine their owndeath indirectly and ostensibly through experiencing the death of others or a fatal health crisis;only so can they attain this knowledge of what is like to die. The protagonist Karl von Kahn, an old but successful fund manager, falls in love with ayounger woman. Thus, he accidentally and unexpectedly looks death in the eye. Like Walser’sother protagonists, his mind moves back and forth between what he wants and what he oughtto, developing from eroticism to Thanatos, as he is helpless in the face of the never before experiencedsituation and the hopeless need. In my opinion, Walser lets Karl confront the subject of death first, although he has sincepublished numerous, sexual novels about the old man. As a realist and negative ironist, he hasnot yet been able to depict what he has not yet experienced. Based on the arguments of Batailleand Baudrillard, this paper analyzes the relationship between eroticism and Thanatos in thisnovel and explores the message of the ironic process of the lust and decay of the old man in latecapitalism.
